A Family Story, Pearl Harbor

USS Detroit (CL-8)

Dolores' father, Fred Bayersdorfer, a Navy Chief, was on this ship at Pearl Harbor.

The USS Detroit was a light cruiser that was moored at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked.

Attack
The USS Detroit was moored between the USS Raleigh and the USS Utah when the Japanese attacked. The USS Raleigh and USS Utah were hit by torpedoes, but the USS Detroit was able to get away.

Response
The USS Detroit fired back at the Japanese planes with its anti-aircraft guns and shot down two Japanese aircraft. The USS Detroit then joined forces with the USS Phoenix, USS St. Louis, and two destroyers to search for Japanese landings on Oahu.

Search
The ships searched the Pacific for three days before returning to Pearl Harbor on December 10.

Many years later, Fred Bayersdorfer became my father-in-law. After his Navy and government service retirements, he worked at our real estate office, in property management, and was fondly known as Mr. B.

Roy - I feel as if I read more of the Pearl Harbor Story...thank you. Did Chief Bayersdorfer ever return to Pearl Harbor and visit the Memorial?

Roy, Thanks for sharing Dolores' family story and keeping that story alive.  Many of us have older relatives touched by that day "that will live in infamy", but many stories are lost now.

That's important family history, Roy.  It's been 83 years since that date in 1941.

I knew I was going to like this one when I read the headline. What a remarkable story, and quite a bit of luck. My great uncle was lost when the Sub Chaser he was aboard was taken out. I thought it was the Pacific, but what I see online says Sicilian Campaign.

I really am glad you posted this! I was just thinking about Pearl Harbor and my mother. She was always disappointed on Dec 7th when not much was mentioned about Pearl Harbor. She was almost 18 when this happened. She never forgot it. Wish I could print this out for her, she would absolutely have loved it.

They always say Never Forget but too many people have no memory of Pearl Harbor.

Thank you so much for sharing this historic memory. And your photo of the Lilies is stunning!

Thank you for sharing this. Mr & Mrs B wouldn't have given birth to Dolores had he been on one of those other ships. It's incredible how just one moment can change lives so dramatically.

Good morning, Roy... your story underscores how there are still many of us for whom Pearl Harbor is not "ancient" history. My Father-in-law was in the Dutch underground and my husband served as a lookout even at the age of five.
