Possibly one may remember the TV series Mission Impossible. The top agency agent portrayed by Peter Graves, would receive a self destructing tape message about the mission if the agent would decided to accept it. The message would specifically state what had to be achieved (who, what, where, when and often why) for the mission to be successful.
Today many Mission Statements are more like Vision Statements as they lack specificity. What I have always encouraged my clients including professional real estate agents to do is to look at their Mission Statement and then ask employees or themselves what did they do to achieve the current Mission. More often than not, these clients could not answer.
An executable Mission Statement is measured in physical dollars, a percentage of growth, physical numbers and is for the current year. In the real estate market due to the economic volatility, going beyond one year may set the professional real estate agent as the small business owner up to fail.
Again it is question time,
“What is Your Mission for the forthcoming Year?”
My suggestion is to think in terms of three (3) W.A.Y. S.M.A.R.T. Goals. Financial viability is one, maintaining professionalism including current license along with ongoing education may be another and increasing clients such as by farming past clients for referrals may be another. NOTE: This Mission Statement will evolve through the strategic thinking planning process.
If you are not familiar with W.A.Y. S.M.A.R.T. Goals, here you go:
- W = Written
- A = Aligned to Purpose, Values, Passion and Vision
- Y – Yours
- S = Specific
- M = MEASURABLE
- A = Attainable
- R = Realistically set high
- T = Time driven, Target date

Extra Strategic Thinking Activity - This may also be the time to look at your personal life and determine a personal mission statement.
The next countdown will examine the importance assessing the current year.
