On This Day in 1941...

83 years ago, on December 7th, 1941 @0748 hours (Hawaii time) the Japanese Empire Striking Force atatcked Pearl Harbor, which dragged the USA into WWII. President Roosevelt addressed the nation, by radio, calling this "a date which will live in infamy."

Yesterday, December 7, 1941--a date which will live in infamy--the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan."

Newly colorized photographs show the the attack on Pearl Harbor

The speech had several points to be made.

  • Inform the American public and Congress.
  • Make the case for a Declaration of War against Japan.
  • Reassure the American population we would win
  • Explain their duty to the future generations.

The Japanese Pearl Harbor Striking Force consisted of 6 aircraft carriers, 2 battleships, 2 heavy cruisers, 1 light cruiser, 9 destroyers, 8 tankers, 23 fleet submarines, 5 midget submarines, and 353 Japanese aircraft.

The WWII generation became known as the "Greatest Generation." The nation rallied together & all sacrificed together. One of the most famous images, in my opinion, was this;

Rosie Riveter Metal Poster Sign

We must never forget what sacrifices were made AND how the nation pulled together to become the most powerful nation the Earth had ever seen.

Good morning, Doug. Our nation pulled together in 1941 and hopefully it will pull together again in coming years.

Good Morning Nina Hollander, Broker

The WWII generation went through rationing, women entering the workforce en masse. I think I still have some ration stamps my grandmother had saved. I am confident Americans will pull together.

Hi Doug,
That day does live on in infamy! My mother worked in the shipyards while my dad was away at war.

Hi Doug-my father was in the army air corps and my uncle in the army. My mother and aunt carried cards with them saying they were Chinese and not Japanese. Everyone sacrificed then. We cannot forget this day.

Thank you for helping to keep this memory alive.

Good Afternoon Kathy Streib

Thank you to your family for serving. My father was in the Marine Corps and his youngest brother was in the Army Air Corp. How difficult it must have been for your mother and aunt.

Thank you for sharing this poignant reminder of our history, Doug Dawes. We were a 13th rate power at the start of WWII. Reflecting on the sacrifices made and the unity that followed is essential, and I appreciate your efforts to keep this important memory alive.

Thank you Lew Corcoran

It's 83 years later and I'm hoping when it's 100 years people will still be sending our reminders.

Doug Dawes as I comment on another blog I got a chance to stop in Hawaii when I was in the Navy and see the memorial.  It is still hard for me to accept how we were caught enough off guard for something like that to happen.
