The Great Cookie Debate: Which Christmas Cookie Rules Your State?

By

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS COOKIES BY STATE

"Christmas cookies and happy hearts. This is how the holiday starts.

.., Unknown

The holidays are here, and with them comes the ultimate question: which Christmas cookie reigns supreme? Across the U.S., every state has its own beloved festive treat that brings a little extra sweetness to the season. Cookies are more than just desserts during the holidays—they’re a symbol of tradition, nostalgia, and love.

"Make the world a better place one cookie at a time."

But have you ever wondered what cookie your state loves most? The results may surprise you!

Today'sHomeOwner.com conducted a nationwide survey, asking 4,500+ Americans about their preferred holiday treats to help settle the great debate. The survey showed that:

  • Sugar cookies with frosting were the clear winner, claiming the top spot in 21 out of 50 states.
  • 12 states had a distinct preference for chocolate chip cookies.
  • Gingerbread cookies came in third with six states claiming them as favorites.

And if you are planning to leave cookies for Santa, according to the blog Eat This, Not That!, sugar cookies just happen to be Santa's favorite, as well!

Good morning Nina. My favorite is the one I can grab off the rack still a bit warm that my wife is baking. So, it changes depending on what she is baking. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin that is very ecumenical of you, Wayne! Nothing quite as tasty as a warm cookie!

Hello Nina - when it comes to the subject, my usual response is, "did someone mention cookies?".  While chocolate chip seems to be a Christmas favorite in California, it seems I am quite flexible as I move across the map you share.  With a somewhat literary shift, I'll add - More, please --- not said in a Dickensian sort of way at all.

Michael Jacobs good morning, Michael... I get that chocolate chip might be a favorite year-round, but somehow I don't associate them with Christmas.

Hi Nina,
Yep, I'm originally an Oregon girl, so that explains my preference for Snickerdoodles. I just had one last night after the Golf Cart Christmas Parade. I did watch the sugar cookie recipe video. Thanks for all the links you provided.

Nina Hollander, Broker

Carol Williams ha-ha, Carol... that might explain why I never had a taste for Snickerdoodles... I'm not from Oregon. I'm more of a gingerbread girl when it comes to Christmas cookies... must be the German in me.

Good morning Nina Hollander, Broker ,

I'm finding it difficult to believe chocolate chip is the favorite Christmas cookie in Texas! We like to bake sugar cookies and decorate for Christmas! Not sure who they are polling!!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX hi Dorie... that's what's always interesting about these kinds of polls... you never know what comes back.

My problem I like all Christmas cookies.  Sprinkling sugar on top, is a win for me, but not my waist line. Thanks for sharing, make it a great Sunday and enjoy your weekend!

Nina, love cookies, especially chocolate chip.   But, do enjoy sugar cookies with frosting and shortbread.   For Christmas I usually made pizzelles, but going to AZ has stopped that too.

Joan Cox hi Joan... as you know, I love my pastries. Cookies I can pass on for the most part. I do love rainbow cookies... maybe because they feel more like cake to me than a cookie.

Hi Nina- where do they get this info!!??  I'm with Nina Hollander, Broker and Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty chocolate chip cookies...though my favorite...don't ever show up at Christmas. Give me iced sugar cookies!!!!

Kathy Streib good morning, Kathy... I suppose it depends on those who answer these surveys. No wonder it's a good idea to vote! :) I'm not a sugar cookie fan. Actually, I'm not much of a Christmas cookie fan at all... I like gingerbread with chocolate icing (German) and I like rainbow cookies (but they are more like bites of cake).

Endre Barath, Jr. good morning, Endre... maybe that preference for chocolate chip comes from the fact that Famous Amos, which helped start the chocolate chip cookie craze, began in California.

Brian England good morning, Brian I grew up with gingerbread cookies at Christmas... German lebkuchen with dark chocolate icing. Still love them. So what would be your choice of cookie at Christmas?

Dec 09, 2024 03:47 AM
Brian England

There are so many others I would choose, but I certainly wouldn't pass up a gingerbread cookie, haha.  I like them all, but would prefer chocolate chip to gingerbread.

Good morning Nina Hollander, Broker, I never baked or ate traditional Christmas cookies but if I had to choose I would pick chocolate chip over gingerbread cookies but chocolate chip for Christmas?

Beth Atalay good morning, Beth... I was just thinking about you yesterday. Trust you are doing well. As for Christmas cookies... I don't bake cookies myself... for any reason. But if I did it wouldn't be chocolate chip for Christmas.
