- Heifer International!
Having given a share of half of a cow one year as a gift and seeing the joyful comments of the person who received it made me a believer in this option.
Mission statement:
The mission of Heifer International is to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. Heifer does this by providing appropriate livestock, training and related services to small-scale farmers and communities worldwide.
Heifer International accomplishes their mission by being a registered non-profit organization eligible to receive tax-deductible donations under 26 U.S.C. Section 501(c)(3). Each donation to Heifer is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, and represents a contribution to its entire mission — which is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth.
Cost of participating? Shares in these gifts can be as low as $10! An entire donation varies a great deal. Starting from $20 (ducks or chicks) up to $275 (Education gift) or $500 (a Heifer) or even to Sponsor a Village - $10,000.
Another dimension of Heifer International's efforts is Empowerment of Women by creating Micro-Loans.
What else is there to say? Micro-loan programs help one woman at a time establish food security for her family. This ia a LOAN PROGRAM not a grant of funds. Once she has her income in progress, she makes payments on her loan until the balance goes to zero. Those funds are used for the next recipient when the loan is repaid. Giving the gift of self-sufficiency is an amazing opportunity.
