Motivational Monday…Where Your Feet Are

Coaches…football, basketball, and baseball…have always been a source of inspirational quotes for me. One of my favorite coaches is Nick Saban.

Though he retired as Alabama’s head coach, he continues to educate and inspire through his presence on College GameDay.

This week, he was asked how he kept his players focused on the game, when others talked about upcoming college bowl games, NFL Scouts, and the national championship.

‘Be where your feet are,' is just, 'Look down ... where are you?' This moment, this time, I can control what I do, I can control how I think, and I'm going to try to do that the best I can.

While winning the National Championship or joining the NFL and even winning the Super Bowl are enviable goals, to get there that 20 year old quarterback has to focus on what he can do now…standing there at the line of scrimmage.

The same holds true for us in our personal and business lives.

Decide where you want to be or what you hope to accomplish. Then…look down at your feet. THIS is where you begin…this becomes your focus.

Good morning Kathy. The past is the past and done, the future is not here yet and unknown, so the only thing that matters is the here and now. Stay focused and some of y9our dreams may come true. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin We can't dwell on the past but we can learn from it. We have no idea what the future holds. But we can control the NOW.

Good Monday morning Kathy Streib, we often worry about things that are beyond our control and stress over them needlessly. Focusing on where we are today and living in the moment is the way to start each and every day. Have a great week!

So good to see you Beth Atalay Often we are so focused on the future that we forget to enjoy what we have now.

Kathy,

I always enjoy reading Motivational Monday. The one about Coach Saben is awesome. Staying grounded where one's feet are is how to stay in the moment; we only have the moment, the past is gone, the future is unknown.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Joe Mojica I'm glad you enjoy it!!!! It's interesting how many have worked with him and are now coaching...Georgia's Kirby Smart and Texas' Steve Sarkisian both worked for him. Their teams played each other Saturday.

Such a good point. Young people especially seem to live in a dream world that they somehow think needs to move faster. Slow down and enjoy...it will go quickly enough.

Hi Kathy,
Being present where you are is so important. We learn that to maintain balance between our business and private lives. Wherever you are... be there!

Carol Williams exactly. My mother-in-law could never enjoy the present, which is sad because she had so many things going for her.

Good morning Kathy,

Coach Jim Saban has some of the best quotes to live by whether in your professional life or personal life. Staying focused on the present, learn from the past and apply those experiences to future responses!

Nick Saban is one of those guys I loved to hate because he wasn't the coach of my team, haha.  He seems like such a great guy though, so he is really hard to hate and he is doing a great day on College Gameday.

Kathy this is so spot on!  Gary and I taught leadership and life success seminars when we first met and we called this concept - Be in THIS MOMENT!  Like you said, what can I do now to make things better, improve etc etc. And then of course.....Just Do It!  And I remember back in my high school and college team days the coach would say......especially for tennis.....where are your feet?  Watch your feet.....calm down, relax and KNOW your follow through will hit the mark. Worked for golf too!
