You Can Say That Again!!

By
Industry Observer

You can say that again!  Say what???

So much of our language is made up of idioms.  "You can say that again" meaning I am in agreement but isn't that strange? We usually ask someone to repeat something if we didn't understand what they said.  If we didn't understand what was said, how on earth can we express agreement with it???

So do you can repeat something if someone says to you, "You can say that again!"?  How about if they say, "Say what?" ?  Does that prompt a repeat of your statement or an explanation about what your statement meant?

What about if you choose not to "say that again" or to explain what you meant to the response "say what",  would you hear someone say, "Cat got your tongue?"?

NOW THAT IS A STRANGE ONE!

Idioms... to "talk till you're blue in the face" might take awhile...or "spilling the beans" might cause a problem for someone.  Is it better to "spill the beans" or to just "spit it out"?

Our language is richer than we know!  Don't you just love idioms?

Hello Judi - wordplay can be fun and idioms are definitely a part of that activity.  I believe it can help keep your brain active.  It's also interesting to me to hear of idioms in different languages - talk about a learning experience.

Great question to ask. Thanks for sharing Judi.

To "talk till you're blue in the face" might take awhile...or "spilling the beans" might cause a problem for someone.  Is it better to "spill the beans" or to just "spit it out"?

Good morning, Judi... nice to see you "back." Trust all is well. All languages have their share of idioms that don't always make sense at first blush (or any blush for that matter).

Good morning Judi. Sometimes they are sense to me and sometimes not. Maybe it's my mood at the time something is said? I just go with the flow. Enjoy your day.

Good morning! When someone says "You can say that again!" I do not repeat myself because I feel they just agreed with me! The way we talk is sometimes wacky, isn't it?

You know, Michael Jacobs was the first person that came to mind, reading this post, Judi! I love a good word-play and have asked myself a couple of those questions you ask!

I hope you're well! Happy 2025!
