The Department of Labor Tried to Ring My Bell!
For many years, I have owned a small, real estate business in southern Utah. A few days ago, the Department of Labor showed up at the door, claiming that I was not paying proper wages to hired contractors and sent an agent out to conduct an interview.
“I need a list of your contractors and how much you pay them,” demanded the agent.
“Well,” I replied, “There’s the sign installer, I pay him $200 a sign plus a bonus at the end of the year."
"The transaction coordinator is paid $300 per completed transaction plus a bonus at the end of the year. "
“The house cleaners that are paid $35 per hour, plus a bonus at the end of the year.”"
"The landscape crew gets paid by the size of job, plus a bonus at the end of the year.”
"Then, there’s the mentally-challenged person who works about 18 hours every day, 6 days a week, Sunday’s by appointment and does 99% of all the work, in person and online. No bonus at the end of the year."
"She makes about $35 per week, pays her own room, board and expenses. I buy her an occasional bottle of wine & a well-deserved trip, now and again, to cope with the stress of business and life in general."
"She also gets to sleep with my husband.”
“That’s the person I want to talk to, the mentally-challenged woman,” said the agent.
“That would be me,” I replied.
I hope this story brought a smile! 😁
