New Jersey has officially banned book bans........
The Freedom to Read Act was just passed and signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy.
The Act prohibits boards of education and governing boards of public libraries from removing books based on the "origin, background, or views of the material or of its authors"
It basically prevents public institutions from censoring library materials unless they are restricting access to developmentally inappropriate material for certain age groups.
And it prevents a small number of individuals from having any power to remove books based on their own personal views.
A library is a place of learning and of discovery. It is based on science and history.
Good for you, New Jersey!
