Thankful Thursday - Ride Down Memory Lane

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Retired Broker/Owner AZ Broker BR030809000

I think I may have mentioned in a previous post that we've been dealing with a master bath main water line issue since before Thanksgiving.  But that's not what I'm grateful for today!  Not a chance!  Hopefully all will be back in place and finished by tomorrow!

What I am grateful for is because of the water line issue we needed to purchase new baseboards AND......that meant we had to take a long drive to get to where we bought the custom baseboards a few years back.  The supplier is in an area that is very warehouse heavy and a lot of traffic.  Not so relaxing by a long shot!

So I suggested we take another route that took us past several golf courses, parks and gorgeous beautiful neighborhoods.  And then, just before the warehouse area we could turn off and got through minimal traffic. Perfect!

It was a drive down memory lane!   My parents used to live in that area years ago and of course I have a lot of good memories of spending time with them there. It was so fun sharing some of those stories with Gary as he'd never been to that home as they moved before he and I got together. All along the drive I shared story after story of this restaurant, that park, that golf course......lots of smiles along the way!  It's been such a lovely pleasant day taking a leisurely drive by choice!  And it was a totally unexpected 'turn in direction' today!

I bet you've had times like this too, right!!  It was such a good feeling today not be in a hurry!!  It was so fun to remember all the good times shared with my family!  Gary enjoyed the drive as much as I did and we both thought, let's do more of this!  Yes!

Do you have stories like this when you  chose to take the 'scenic route?  Share one or two and smile with the rest of us Rainers!

I love how you and Gary are making new memories by taking different paths to reconnect with your roots. Looks like you will have time to do a lot more of this.

Hi Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 it was such a lovely few hours and the weather was so nice too!  Of course little Norman came along with us and he loved hanging his head out the window!  And....actually 'taking the scenic route' is something I've done often over the years.   This one was just so unexpected....and lovely!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten sometimes a bad experience can turn into the source of a great experience.  If you had not had the water issue, which created the need for more baseboards, you probably not have taken that very enjoyable ride with all the great memories.

Yup, you're right George Souto !  Although I would much prefer the issue hadn't popped up!  It's been such a mess and noisy too!  But I always say, out of lemons, MAKE LEMONADE!  And that's what we did!

Hi Jeff Masich-Scottsdale AZ Associate Broker,MBA,GRI I've often taken the 'scenic route' and I find it's almost always very relaxing.  Yesterday was just a total surprise! For what's been a kind of hectic few weeks it was so nice to simply relax and enjoy.  And the best part the route we took was shorter than taking a freeway.  Hope you're enjoying the holidays Jeff 🎅

Hi Anna- jingle the car keys and I'm right there. My uncle used to take us out for impromptu drives on Sundays. Larry is also big on not turning around or asking directions (like most men!)  , leading us on some very interesting drives.

Hi Kathy Streib I wonder if your uncle was giving your folks a break from having the kids around!  My Grandpa used to do that with us kids.  And we'd always end up getting a Nut Goodie!  I have no idea why Nut Goodies I guess he liked them!!  Oh Men don't ask for directions.....really?  I thought Gary was the only one!  LOL

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. it was very sweet and relaxing.  They had a winter home here for about 10 years I think and it was so nice having them close again!  I enjoyed every minute!  And....do tell about your plumbing fun.  The guys are finishing up right now in ours and I'll be so happy to get things back in order.  Happy Holidays here we come!!

Hi Anna,
What a great way to make an otherwise unpleasant trip into a pleasant one down Memory Lane.

Sometimes when I am in the area of Oregon where I grew up, I take a detour through the old neighborhood we lived in before my parents died. It is a bittersweet trip down Memory Lane, but I think it's important to keep some connection to our roots.

Absolutely Carol Williams !  The idea hit me when we stopped for lunch at a little park.  That's when I suggested.....hey.....let's take the scenic route and avoid the freeways and congestion. Heaven to both our ears! And for you, you were so young when you lost both your parents.....so important to keep their memories alive.   My folks were 60/70's when they bought a winter home here.  I was so happy to have them here!  Lots of good stories from those 10 years.......they were both a hoot!  Especially my Mom as I've mentioned before......she was a born comedian!

Hello Anna - intentional detours are part of many paths I take especially of the pondering kind.  I am certain your post will help flush out some clogged-up memories.  And you're right about choosing baseboards, I think they help the flow of a home and its floor plan.

Hi Michael Jacobs you know it really was a pondering drive yesterday....and a very pleasant one at that! My parents were great people...and a lot of fun to be around.  As for the baseboard's, we were kind of stuck as we had to replace the damaged ones with what we had originally bought 2 years ago.  Would of looked pretty wonky with plain ones from HD.  And today is the day.......project is being completed as I type.  YES!

Good morning Anna. One of the things we do when visiting friends in Florida is taking the time to drive around our old neighborhoods and talk about the good times we had there. Retirement has benefits beyond growing older and dealing with a few extra aches and pains, ha, ha. May you do it again.

Hi Wayne Martin it's  so nice to remember all the good times with friends,  isn't it!  We feel so fortunate to have such a wonderful group of friends that  we've had for years.  And yesterday it was just so nice to recall all those special times with my folks! I missed them A LOT when they decided to move back to MN.  Brrrrrr.

Taking a more scenic route, especially one with memories attached, can be a lot of fun! We recently visited the east coast and had reason to drive through our old town. We were both pointing out things and sharing memories along the way. Fun!

Hi Kat Palmiotti it was so much fun......much to my surprise as I had been dreading driving way down there on the freeways.  It came about so easily....so you know somebody popped an idea in  my head.  And I ran with it!  Enjoy your travels along the way down memory lane!!

What a wonderful day you had, Anna, remembering all those places and times. I've never had a drive like that, but have had the same experience walking around NY City.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker it was  wonderful and I'm still recalling so many stories of when my folks had a winter home here.  I loved having them so close!  As for the 'scenic route' I take them often to avoid a lot of traffic.  Try it sometime.....it's so much more pleasant without all the crazy drivers and traffic bugging you!  It may- or may not- take you any longer than your regular route.  Have fun!!!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten hi Anna... I always take the "scenic" routes around Charlotte. I'll do just about anything to avoid the interstates. But still plenty of crazy drivers even on the local or back roads.

Hi Anna:

So sorry that you have had to deal with a major plumbing issue, but what a wonderful side benefit and a bit of a rainbow on a cloudy day. Sounds like more scenic trips in the future for you and Gary.

Have a great weekend!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff Dowler, CRS !  The good news is right this minute it's being cleaned up and it's DONE! Alleluia!

It was such a pleasant drive!  And yes to many more drives like that and more often.  We've been doing that for sometime, mainly to avoid crazy drivers and traffic but this one was way different as it had so many good memories!
