Why Haul A Box You Haven't Opened Since The Last Move

I remember moving from our large home to the much smaller condo here in Destin Florida. In our attic there were several boxes in the far, almost impossible to get to. without breaking a leg corner.

What was in said boxes? Long last valuables? Treasures beyond measure? Nope, junk I had packed back in 2007. Many of our local buyers are in the same boat. Let's look at how to make the transition from a larger home to beach condo.

1) Stuff that has been in storage since the last move, simply toss it (or donate). For whatever reason those Christmas decorations that have been in the attic since Y2K no longer make the cut. Just get rid of them. Today...

2) Consider your beach house guests-- Folks that visit will want to be outside. Then they will shop or want to eat some fresh seafood. As a result you will not need multiple living areas or massive guest bedrooms. So cut back most of that furniture. Better yet, get rid of ALL your furniture and buy new for your space.

3) You will eat out more than you think-- At our "high water market" we had four kids under roof. Going to restaurants was both expensive and a logistical nightmare. But just the two of you? Honestly it's not more expensive to eat out. Portions are HUGE on the Emerald Coast so share a plate or take leftovers for tomorrow's lunch. So that second deep freeze can back in the old country as well.

4) Downsize to one car--This will depend on where you are career wise, but many couples will have one car and then a golf cart. Yes, life is that fun here.

5) Go ahead and pass on some of those family treasures to the next generation. Make new memories (and buy new treasures) at the beach!

Great time of the year for this post and I'm literally going through this right now as I clean out and vacate a storage unit. I'm a sentimental packrat but I'm trying to do this month exactly as you advise. This is a very good post.

Hello Doug - there are some people who really like their "stuff".  While I can "toss" a lot, there's always room for improvement.  I know people who move packed boxes from one place to another having never opened them for years.  I know it's a serious issue so I don't want to make light of it.  With that said, it might be difficult - those boxes must be heavy!

Excellent tips for cleaning up. There just isn't a reason to keep things that have been sitting in a box for years.
