Friday Fun Day: Just for fun let me share some quotes from Crazy English... my regular readers and friends know that English is my third language. Now with that said it never gets old to share some fun from Richard Lederer's book "Crazy English" I can relate to his quotes in so many ways.

Let's look at words and their definition:

Handicap: advantage, disadvantage: a. What's your handicap in golf? b. His lack of education is a handicap.

Now here is another one, let me know what you think of this one:

Mortal: deadly subject to death: a. The knight delivered a mortal blow, b. All humans are mortal.

Moot: debatable, not worthy of debate: a. Capital punishment is a moot point. b. That the earth revolves around the sun is a moot point.

Bolt: to secure in place; to dart away: a. I'll bolt the door. b. Did you see the horse bolt?

Anyway, I could go on and on reading words from this book feel free to share some of your own suggestions. Hope you had a good chuckle after all it is Friday.

I think that the way English is spoken today, especially among the younger generation, is quite different than how it was intended to be spoken, haha.

Hi Endre... it can certainly be confusing when certain words have more than one meaning. But I've found the same in Russian and French as well.

Endre, The English language is indeed fascinating with its quirks. How about Bark (sound a dog makes) vs. Bark (the outer layer of a tree). Is this also true in the 2 other languages you speak?

Your post reminded me of a fact I just read that only 6% of the total known English words are every spoken or used. My sense is individuals like you who read probably use more than 6%.  Great book, and indeed fascinating given the English language is a hybrid of many languages.

Endre, I love discovering words, meanings, and derivations. I have a friend from high school who majored in English who gave me a great compliment the other day, referring to me as a word maven, and then bestowing upon me a word I'd never heard before:  cunctator - a procrastinator. Yikes!

Endre Barath, Jr. good morning, Endre... it took me a while to get a grasp of the various ways French used their language and expressions. Russians also have them.

Leanne Smith  loved your comment, when I was in High School, I would stay up late to watch William F Buckley Jr. he had an incredibly large vocabulary and used to beat up his guests with his rich vocabulary, and I wanted to be like him... I suspect he had about 30 % of the vocabulary you are referring to, Endre

Good morning Endre. Sometimes the brains locks in on one meaning before you read the complete sentence. When that happens I define it as utter confusion and read it again hoping the light in my mind goes on! Enjoy your day.

Hi Endre:

English has all sorts of quirks. What about words that have multiple meanings and are also pronounced differently depending on the meaning. "Dove" immediately comes to mind.
