Elder abuse is something no one wants to think about, but as a Seniors Real Estate Specialist®, I felt it was important for me to attend a seminar on the topic.
Elder abuse comes in many forms; physical, phychological/emotional, financial abuse, neglect, restraint/medication. Sad to say, many of the perpetrators are family members or other trusted care givers.
If you are concerned about the safety or well-being of a Senior or a disabled adult, you can make an anonymous and confidential call to the TIES Line, where your call will be answered by an experienced social worker. In San Mateo County, that number is 800-675-8437. In Santa Clara County it is 800-414-2002. In San Francisco County, call 800-814-0009.
In other states a call to the County Health Department would be a good first-step.
While Realtors are not State of California mandated reporters of such abuse, one should always report suspected cases so they can be investigated thoroughly by trained personnel.
