The Best Color For Your Kitchen May Surprise You!

The best color for your kitchen may surprise you because it is not the color on your walls, countertops, cabinets, tablecloths, napkins, or decor. The color I am referring to is edible ORANGE.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Let's be motivated to make 2025 a healthy New Year. Eating right from the start and choosing your fruits and vegetables can promote energy, less stress, vitamins, minerals, and improve your attitude. Spending money on a professional painter or paying a contractor to update your kitchen does nothing for your physical health. Living a healthy lifestyle increases your odds of enjoying a happy and healthy life. Growing your own food would be perfect if you had the space, knowledge, and know how. But if you can't and you go to the grocery stores or markets, here's something to think about.

The next time you go grocery shopping think ORANGE!  Perhaps putting the color orange at the top of your list may help. While looking in the produce department or visiting your local Farmer's Market, you may want to consider orange fruits and vegetables including:

  • Oranges
  • Carrots
  • Acorn Squash
  • Butternut Squash
  • Orange Peppers
  • Orange Tomatoes
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Pumpkin
  • Papayas
  • Tangerines
  • Persimmons
  • Saffron
  • Turmeric
  • Apricots
  • Mangos,
  • Kumquats
  • Guavas
  • Cantaloupes
  • Nectarines
  • Kabocha Squash

Fruits and vegetables with carotene may save your life. Check with your doctor or Nutritionist to find out what they suggest. After all, orange alone can't do it all for your body. Ask questions! Discover which vegetables are high in carotene (the yellow-orange pigment that gives them their orange color) that are made by plants, and even fungi, such as chanterelle mushrooms.

Ask and verify. How much carotenoids do you need to help protect you or your family from colds, flu, and infections to the lungs, kidneys, skin, digestive system and mucous membranes. Also, do you really need to depend on vitamins in a bottle? How trustworthy are vitamins in the expensive bottles, where do they come from, who manufactures them, and are they good for you? You may discover buying healthy fruits and vegetables is cheaper than depending on a random bottle of vitamins. The best way to maximize your health is knowing what's going into your body.

Why I love my Farmer's Market. Where I shop, at the small but adequate Farmer's Market, there is always someone to talk to. I know who to ask, and often times my shopping spree becomes a session in education and the people I get to know, like, and trust, make suggestions or they go to the back of the store to pick out the freshest produce that hasn't been put out yet. Knowing the Manager is very important. I have received many excellent recipes and ideas about preparing food I never thought about before. And the best part is, I don't have to pay for advice or suggestions, or schedule an appointment at the Farmer's Market. For example, tonight I plan to make orange rice. Personally, I don't get advice about healthy fruits and vegetables from traditional grocery stores. Yes! We are creatures of habits. Yes! We can change.

Hello Patricia - I have long heard that eating the rainbow of colors (including orange) in nature can be healthy.   Admittedly, I don't follow that advice on each grocery store visit, but it's a plan that makes sense on different levels.  Shop the perimeter of the store too - there's often too much processed stuff in the center.  And avoid those too good to be true end caps on the aisles.

Good morning, Michael Jacobs

Yes! Choosing a rainbow of colors in nature is positively beneficial to our health. I don't know if it's just me, but I crave oranges and carrots the most in winter or dry weather. And I enjoy fresh squeezed orange juice the most starting this time of year.

I also avoid the center of the store unless I know specifically what I need, like rice. I gave up on canned goods a long, long time ago back in Illinois with no regrets. In addition, I pay close attention to expiration dates and that's why I don't hunt down bargains in the grocery store or even shampoo! Now is the time to empty pantries and cupboards.

Stay healthy! Love your comments!

Patricia, I doubt I get moved and set up in time for a garden in 2025, but I have quite a few packs of heirloom seeds in the basement that include quite a few of various orange colors (carrots, melons, pumpkins, etc).  Looking forward to finding out what we like and what will grow readilly

Liz and Bill Spear - The ground and weather conditions always dictate when it is or is not a good time for planting. I'm so happy you're getting closer to the end zone on your new home! Your heirloom seeds will get put to good use and I am cheering for you to get started on your new garden in 2025 or later as weather conditions permit.

I wish you both and all your animal kingdom the best of healthy living in your new environment! Also, I wish you a prosperous New Year!

Excellent advice, Patricia. At first I thought you were suggesting we paint our kitchens orange... and that was never going to happen in my kitchen! :))))

Nina Hollander, Broker - I got your attention! There is no way I would recommend orange for painted walls in a kitchen.

Thank you for your support and "Excellent advice," comment! I really appreciate that very much.

Hi Patricia!  Great message for bringing in 2025!  I kind of follow the 'rainbow' theory....not consciously, but just normally.  And we're lucky to have many sources of organic produce nearby so it makes it so much easier.  And......why am I craving an orange now.  A really good juicy one!   Happy New Year!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - Everyone needs to know where their food is coming from these days. Over the years, I have noticed people are willing to spend a small (or big) fortune for kitchen updates, paying no attention to their health. The oranges I'm buying from Texas these past few days are delicious!

Happy New Year!

Thank you, Patricia Feager, for this enlightening post about the health benefits of incorporating orange foods into our diets! Your emphasis on healthy eating choices and community engagement at farmer's markets is both inspiring and practical as we move toward a healthier new year.

Lew Corcoran - I gave up junk food and snacks a long, long time ago. Yet, I usually see more people buying chips, pretzels, popcorn, etc., and that's what their shopping carts are filled with these days. I feel sorry for kids who get junk food over healthy produce.

Happy & Healthy New Year!

Patricia as long as the color orange is a bowl, and not on my walls I would be OK with it.  ☺️

George Souto - I have a really nice bowl made in Italy. Do you have a bowl like this one? It's made in Italy, and I love it because it is so cheery! I would never paint my walls orange. I just love edible orange produce!

I do eat quite a few of those orange foods - I love them!

As for orange paint color? Icky!

Kat Palmiotti - Check out my orange bowl in the comment I left for George Souto! That is the only orange bowl I keep in my kitchen. I stopped at the Farmer's Market and bought my produce yesterday! I'm also an advocate for eating healthy like you! I just wish my soil was better to plant fresh veggies in the garden. There is nothing else that beats home grown food.

Building a raised bed is not something I want to do.
