RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR: 50+ FUN FACTS ABOUT HOW AMERICANS WILL DO IT IN 2025

How much do you know about how Americans will be celebrating New Year's Eve and New Year's Day this year? For example, did you know:

  • 24% of Americans will celebrate New Year's Eve at home, while 54% will usher in the new year with friends and family.
  • 36% of Americans have no plans at all to celebrate on New Year's Eve (that's up from 22% last year).
  • 25% of Americans fall asleep before the clock strikes midnight.
  • 67% of Americans say New Year's Eve is their favorite holiday.
  • The three top cities this year to celebrate New Year's Eve are (1) Orlando, (2) Orlando, and (3) San Diego.
  • 360+ million glasses of champagne and sparkling wine will be consumed on New Year's Eve.
  • 175+ million people will watch the ball drop on New Year's Eve with some 1 million people in attendance at Times Square.
  • New Year's Eve is the busiest night of the year for illegal, celebratory gun fire!
  • More cars are stolen on New Year's Day than any other day of the year. Sadly, almost 43,000 people are hurt each year in New Year's Eve car crashes and the holiday is the cause of 375+ fatalities.

For more information about celebrating New Year's Eve in New York City, about the New York City ball drop, about the Rose Bowl Parade, about how Americans make (and keep) New Year resolutions, and more check out the full New Years By The Numbers article from WalletHub, which provides 50+ fun facts about New Year's Eve and New Year.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... my "celebration" will consist of an early supper of Escargots Bourguignone and a glass of Champagne... fairly early in the the evening. Can't remember the last time I "lasted" until midnight and I figure it's midnight somewhere in the world when I'm ready to ring in the new year! :)))

What a fun read! I am in the minority as I've never liked New Year's Eve so it's one of my least favorite holidays, we have no plans, we'll stay up until 10pm and say Happy New Year in NY time and then go to bed! I have also never had an interest in being in NYC on New Year's.

That all being said, I hope you have a wonderful New Year's Eve/Day!

Kat Palmiotti good morning, Kat... I'll be lucky to even be awake at 10pm! See my comment above to Sheila Agranoff! Of course, having lived in NY City for many, many year and having grown up there, I've been in the City on New Year's Eve... but never close to Times Square. Always thought of it as a "tourist thing." And having been brought up in a European household, New Year's Eve was always a quiet evening with family. Wishing you and yours the happiest of new years.

Good morning Nina. I will be at home. My car will be secure in my garage. I likely will have a glass of champagne. And, hopefully will be asleep by midnight. Enjoy your day.

What a fun read! There are so many different ways people will celebrate the New Year. I can't believe it is almost 2025. Happy New Year! 🥂

Matthew Klinowski, PA I, as well, Matthew find it hard to believe that 2025 is almost upon us... and as someone who was born in the 1940's I'm still amazed I'm still here to see 2025... we could hardly envision 2000 when I was growing up.

Hello Nina - even though I spent a few of my earliest adulthood NYE experiences in San Diego, nothing too memorable comes immediately to mind.  It's likely I was kinda boring in those days too.  Ah, consistency.   Thank you for sharing these fun facts.

Michael Jacobs good morning, Michael... can't say I've ever celebrated New Year's Eve with an major "hoopla." I've enjoyed many lovely evenings, but not all the insanity.

Nina I will be among the 24% celebrating New Year's Eve at home, and among the 175 million watching the ball drop at midnight.  However, I will not be among the those drinking 360+ million glasses of champagne, or sparkling wine.  ☺️

George Souto hi George... I'll be among the 25% at home, as well. I will not be watching the ball drop (except in my dreams). I will. however, enjoy a glass of champagne!

These are some very interesting facts. 45 tons of trash from one night?? I wouldn't have thought that the most popular days to steal cars are all on holidays.

This is one of the only New Years Eves I have spent at home but I am sick with bronchitis so going out is not an option,

Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!

Lisa Friedman good morning and Happy New Year, Lisa! So sorry to hear you've started the new year not feeling well. Get well soon! I'm just the opposite... I can't remember the last time I wasn't at home on New Year's Eve!

Nina Hollander, Broker - I have to say, I was in the lower percentile in the first three bullet points. I did wake up at midnight because I heard firecrackers but went back to sleep.

WOW! That's a lot of Champaign that was bought to ring in the New Year! I'm sure a lot were sold in quantities for Restaurants, Hotels, and other Special Events.

I would say the Top New Year Resolutions are accurate.

Happy New Year!

Patricia Feager good morning, Patricia... always fun to see how one compares to everyone else for holidays like this. I also woke up suddenly at midnight because of firecrackers, but I think I fell back asleep in about one minute!
