Thank you for all of you, who checked in, called, texted and emailed me as to how we are doing with the fires. I thought I would give a quick update here.
We are safe, since we live next to Los Angeles International Airport, better known as LAX. We have had very few power outages over the years, and they only lasted a very short time, because we are in the same grid as LAX. As well as gratefully no devastating fires in our area over the years.
Let me share with you, these devastating fires are about 15 miles from us. The closest one was about 9 miles from us in the Hollywood Hills, but it was contained late this morning.
The greater Los Angeles area sadly is covered with flammable vegetation and brush, including dense chaparral. If they are dry and in areas that haven’t been cleared, it has a huge potential for intense fires. Needless to say, once ignited, the area’s steep terrain can cause fires to spread quickly uphill, making containment difficult. The Pacific Palisades sadly falls into this category.
I recall reading years ago a report from an organization that identified over 10,000 Pacific Palisades properties as being at high risk for wildfire damage over the next few decades. I always wondered why we as a state, do not clear vegetation like in Europe? We only require the homeowners to keep the brush clear within a 100 ft from their home.
Ironically add to this, all of the Pacific Palisades is considered by the Los Angeles Fired Department as a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone along with other mountainous regions such as Brentwood, Beverly Hills Post Office and Bel Air.
Sadly, it is still fresh in everyone’s mind the Malibu Fires that they call the Franklin Fires now. Hard to believe that lasted ten days and was contained by Decembre 19 and sadly it burned through 4,000+ acres and destroyed 20 structures.
Again, thank you for your prayers, thoughts and concerns and our thoughts go out to those who have and are being affected by these devastating fires and those brave firefighters that are trying to save us.
