Turn The Heat On

When working with buyers and sellers, everyone seems to have a strong preference for their source of home heating. Some choices are oil, gas, radiant, electric, propane, geothermal, and wood stoves. There is a love/hate relationship between the different heating systems. Always find out if there is a strong preference for or against a specific heat source. Go ahead and ask

"What type of heat do you prefer?"

Oil heat is a solid option with both benefits and drawbacks.
Effective Heating: Oil furnaces can consistently warm your home, especially in cold weather. Make sure you have the right size furnace—too small won't heat well, and too large can hike up fuel costs.
- Fuel Efficiency: There are ways to improve fuel efficiency, like retrofitting your system or replacing an old furnace, which can lower your heating bills.
- Regular Maintenance: Keeping up with maintenance is needed to keep your oil heater running longer. Using electric space heaters can also help manage oil use.

Fluctuating Prices: Oil prices vary widely, especially in winter, leading to unexpected costs.
- Maintenance Needs: Oil systems require regular upkeep to maintain efficiency, but they tend to be safer than gas since they emit fewer toxic gases. Still, secure storage is important.
While gas heating is often more efficient, not everyone can access natural gas, making oil a good choice for many. In comparison to electric heaters, oil can retain heat longer, providing a lasting investment.
In short, weigh your heating needs, maintenance willingness, and costs to decide if oil heat suits you. Being informed is key to ensuring comfort in your home.

Good morning! There are definitely options for heating, and people do have preferences. Where I am, oil heat is not a thing. Most homes use electric heat, natural gas or propane and/or wood stoves. And that's it!

Hello Margaret - a career in real estate reinforces that people have preferences for many sorts of things.  Being and staying comfortable is understandable.  For me, putting on a sweater and an extra blanket can work but I know that isn't the case for everyone.  Listening carefully can make a difference.

This is good advice to share. In our area, I recommend annual service contracts.

Hello Margaret, I remember my dads old house was only having coal in a stove and stove pipe going up to the second floor.  Years later when I was maybe 6 we got a coal burner and would have to empty the ashes daily.  Years later he switch to Oil Heat.  wow lots of changes.

Margaret I have heard prices used many times as the reason to choose a particular source for heating.  But over the years I have learned that in the long run there is very little difference between heating sources.  Prices go up and down for all of them.  A better a better reason for choosing what heating source to use in my opinion is which one you have the most confidence.

Margaret, Yes good to do your research and figure out what is best for you.
When using oil best to be on a plan where your tank is filled on a regular basis especially during winter months with an increase in consumption. That way there is no problem with running out because you forgot to order a fill up.
