Darn Refrigerator

It's been a while since our fridge went a bit crazy and froze veggies that were sitting in water to keep them fresh. Obviously Timmothy remembers one of the times it froze everything liquid and passed that thought on through his cartoon.

Over cooling does beat having your compressor go out and forcing you to replace the entire fridge... we have had to do that twice in 5 years. Replacing a refrigerator is expensive. If yours is over cooling you may want to visit this cool site (pun intended).

You just never know when a major appliance will leave you in a lerch. The real problem is refrigerators, stoves, furnaces and AC units can all be budget busters AND if you just purchased a house you may not have the funds to immediately replace the dead appliance.

This is the reason I highly recommend a home warranty plan to be purchased prior to the closing of a home. If you are a Buyer you can ask the Seller to purchase one and they rarely (in my experience) refuse. If you are the Seller advertising that your listing has a Home Warranty will make it more attractive to potential Buyers.

I believe if you ask any agent with 10 or more years experience they can all tell you a story of a major appliance going out with-in a week of a new owner having purchased a home.

You sure to seem to be having a problem with your fridges, Bob! I got 14 years out of my last one and my garage upright freezer is 27 years old. The minute my house turned 8 years old, I slapped a home warranty on it... since then, it's paid to replace to A/C's, a $3,000 fridge, a $3,000+ Advantium oven, and lots of repairs that would have cost me hundreds and hundreds of dollars if I went out of pocket.

Hello Bob - I remember learning the term planned obsolescence in school.  Anecdotally, I have seen examples of it in major appliances and elsewhere.  Proving such things is beyond my knowledge though.   I

Good morning Michael Jacobs . The most blatant example I can give is I had an Epson printer that I loved. It had an ink tank on it made by an aftermarket manufacture. I could dump any brand ink in it and it just kept going... until a message came up on my computer monitor saying "Your printer has met its planned life expectancy" and it quit printing. I checked with a local Epson dealer and they said we can replace the chip that counts copies or you can buy a new printer. I did buy a new HP and will never own an Epson product ever again.

Hello Bob "RealMan" Timm indeed appliances are costly to repair/replace. Those bigger ticket items like ACs can be unaffordable for many. Having a home warranty has saved many of my clients a lot of $$$$$$$$.

You obviously present the Home Warranty in a very good way Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist . I felt bad if a client refused one so I also presented it well.

Hello Bob, I have seen so many items go out within a year of someone buying a home.  Home warranties are worth it.

We are on the same page about the home warranties Will Hamm . I alway cringe when a new home owner doesn't get one.

Thank you Lew Corcoran . I always thought a Home Warranty was essential when purchasing a home that has been lived in before.

Bob, I bought a refrigerator from Sears (before they went out of business), and was an "Elite".  Found out it was made by LG.   The compressor went out after 14 months, and LG knew about this issue, but continued to sell these appliances.    It cost me over $1k to have it repaired.  Of course, I did not take the extended warranty, silly me.

I have thought about it after that too.

I rarely take out the extended warranty Joan Cox but your story has me thinking it would be a good idea.

When it comes to electronics you just never know John Pusa . My thought has been if it makes it 30 days there is a pretty good chance it will work a long time.
