Bagelicious Bliss: Celebrating National Bagel Day in Charlotte

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty 179530

IT'S NATIONAL BAGEL DAY!

National Bagel Day, which is celebrated every January 15th, is a wonderful excuse to indulge in one of the world’s most beloved comfort foods. From chewy, golden crusts to fluffy interiors, bagels have more than earned their spot as a breakfast staple and versatile treat.

"A bagel is a doughnut with the sin removed."

- George Rosenbaum

WHEN IT COMES TO BAGELS, DID YOU KNOW:

  • That 60+% of Americans surveyed eat a bagel for breakfast a least twice a week? As someone (unknown) said: "Bagels are the breakfast of champions."

  • That the American bagel market was valued at $5.58 billion in 2024?

  • That New Jersey and New York are not the states where the most bagels are consumed. Apparently the most number of bagels consumed are in Hawaii and Maine! Who knew?

  • That Monticello New York, the birthplace of the bagel, and official bagel capital of the world, is known not only for the quaint charm of the town, but also for the annual Bagel Festival?

  • That bagels must be round in shape to be considered a bagel? How about that the hole in a bagel is to make them bake faster and stackable on a wooden pole for selling?

  • That bagels are the only bread that is boiled before being baked? They are dipped in boiling water for approximately 3-5 minutes before going into the oven.

  • That the bagel-making process was once a trade secret controlled by the Beigel Bakers' Union which only admitted sons of existing members into the union and conducted its meetings almost entirely in Yiddish?

"Bagels: The perfect balance of chewy, crunchy, and delicious."

- Unknown

"A bagel is a blank canvas waiting to be topped with deliciousness."

WHERE TO BUY BAGELS IN THE CHARLOTTE AREA

Charlotte is home to quite a few "bagelries," as I call them. Here are six to picks for bagel lovers:

  • Poppyseed Bagels, have two locations in the Greater Charlotte area; one in Matthews, one in Weddington. They advertise themselves as NY-style bagels. Family-owned and operated by a third generation, Poppyseed bake their bagels in-house.

  • Bagel Boys, whose shop is in Waverly in south Charlotte off Providence Road. They also advertise themselves as NY-style bagels served with true Southern hospitality and offer well over a dozen types of bagels. SPECIAL OFFER TODAY ON NATIONAL BAGEL DAY: Get a FREE bagel with cream cheese with each in-store purchase.

  • Jeff's Bagel Run, who recently opened in Blakeney in south Charlotte. These are not styled as NY-style bagels and they boast that their bagels are never toasted. They have some six types of bagels and lots of cream cheese options. The espresso cream cheese is like eating coffee ice cream!

  • New York Old School Bagel & Deli, opened in Carmel Village in 2024. It won Charlotte's Best of the Best (BOB) award in 2024. This "bagelry" offers some 20 different kinds of bagels.

  • Poppy's Bagels & More, opened since 2010, have two locations in Charlotte. One at 2921 Providence Road and one at 2201 South Boulevard. Family-owned and operated, Poppy's bagels offers a dozen varieties of bagels.

  • Family Dough Bagels, in Mint Hill, who advertise themselves as "just New Yorkers makin' bagels." All bagels are made on premises by the Brooklyn, NY natives. They also offer fresh whipped cream cheese and house-made flavored cream cheese for their bagels.

"A bagel is a round bread with a hole in the middle, and yet it's one of the most delicious things on Earth."

- Anthony T. Hincks

Hmm, National Bagel Day?  I am not a fan of bagels and correctly I am not eating any pastries or bakery goods. However your posting provided information for local citizens which I am sure they will appreciate.

Leanne Smith oh wow, Leanne. I love me a good NY style bagel! Of course, maybe that's because I grew up with them. After 27 years in Charlotte, I'm so happy to be seeing "good" bagels be available.

I grew up with "Fika" where a cup of coffee was enjoyed with coffee cake, fruit or baked rolls.

Good morning Nina. "The bagel is a donut with its own form of sin" is more correct. I know from experience. Try as I do to stay away, have them several times a year and drive several miles to a special bagel place to get them fresh. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin good morning, Wayne... I've learned that if I don't deny myself things I love I am happy to eat them in moderation and then it's pure pleasure.

Nina, as you may know New York has amazing bagel stores. There’s just something comforting about a fresh, warm bagel that feels so perfectly New York. Just not the same elsewhere!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 I do know, Sheila! Fortunately, we've had so many New Yorkers move to Charlotte and some have opened bagel stores that would give New York bagels a run for their money.

National Bagel Day! Who knew?

I had a bagel last November when we were in NY. We don't have a good bagel place here so I haven't had one in years. It was SO good!

Jan 15, 2025 06:09 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Kat Palmiotti that's how I felt when I first moved to Charlotte, Kat. H&H Bagels ship from NY... you might want to look into it... don't know how expensive it is to ship to Montana.

Jan 15, 2025 06:42 AM

Kat Palmiotti back in the day when I travelled to NYC more frequently and we didn't have options in Charlotte, I would stop in at H&H and bring bagels home and freeze them.

Bagels are kind of like pizza. They can call what Dominos sells pizza...and they can call what Einstein sells bagels...but once you go to Ess-a-bagel on 3rd Ave in Manhattan, you quickly realize that ain't no real bagel...lol

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty hi Jeff... no doubt about it, but there is nothing quite like a real NY bagel.

Nina- Larry and I were spoiled by the bagels we used to get when we lived in South Florida. There were authentic NY style deli's and bagel shops there. I loved poppy seed bagels with a smear of cream cheese and a little lox...maybe a few capers. I haven't had a good bagel since we moved back to Texas. (I've had some excellent donuts though!LO )

Jan 15, 2025 05:14 PM

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... with so many people moving to Charlotte area from New York and New Jersey, we've been fortunate to have bagel shops open who make real NY-style bagels. And they can also always be ordered online from H&H Bagels where I used to buy bagels when I lived in NY City.

Nina- Happy Bagel Day.  From your post, I learned information about bagels that I didn't know before. I love bagels but I might have them only once or twice a year. Breads easily put 'love handles' on me, so I stay away from breads.  Thanks for the enjoyable and interesting post though.  Joe

Joe Mojica good morning, Joe... I avoid carbs from breads, myself, but you can always talk me into a good bagel. A bagel a couple of times a months does no damage as far as I'm concerned.

I am heartbroken. About a month ago Absolute Bagels on the UWS, a little south of Columbia University- suddenly closed. The owner learned bagel making from working at Ess-a-bagel first. Absolute bagels was ranked one of the top 10 bagel shops in city- and on any given day lines would form down the block and around the corner. Apparently the sudden shut down was due to health code violations- and the final straw for the owner. I suspect what happened was there was a grocery store next door that shut down a few months ago...and pests from the closed supermarket made there way next door to the bagel shop.

When they were fresh out of the oven and hot- you didn't need a schmear- a meal onto itself. I would occasionally run into friends and clients while waiting on line for my turn...and now there is no real equal anywhere close. The count on the bakers dozen was often wrong- but it didn't matter because in the long run, it would all even out. Apparently I am not the only one surprised and heartbroken: https://www.westsiderag.com/2025/01/15/a-conversation-with-longtime-uws-absolute-bagels-manager-im-heartbroken

FYI- H&H has reopened a few years ago- but they had shut down for a while. They cooked the books- and there were holes in the accounting- lol, funny but also true.

Jan 16, 2025 09:31 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Adam Feinberg oh wow, Adam... I had no idea H&H had closed down for a while. Then again, once we had a number of bagel shops/bakeries that provided NY style bagels, I stopped ordering on line from H&H. So sorry to hear your favorite local place closed. One of my favorite places that was literally less than two minutes from house also closed a few months ago. It had been there for years, survived COVID, and then suddenly closed.

Bob "RealMan" Timm now there's a thought, Bob. You do need to get up early to make the bagels, but you can probably shut down at 2pm.
