Tuesday’s Treasures…My Squirrels

Today is Squirrel Appreciation Day. Oh yes, I am aware that many do not appreciate squirrels and the havoc they bring to your home, especially when they choose to make your attic their playground.

Larry and I went out Sunday to Meyer Park looking for Mr. NoTail. He usually comes up to us and sometimes will follow us for more peanuts. We didn’t see him but I was excited when two other squirrels came up to us.

Lately I’ve seen Instagram posts (Angie Harmon) of people with pet or pet-adjacent squirrels.

When we moved back to Houston, it took me almost a year to gain the trust of a resident squirrel to take a peanut from me.

You can learn more about squirrels or if not go out and buy a bag of raw peanuts for them. By the way, they may not tell you, but they’ve taken grapes and strawberries from me!!

One more thing…

For our upcoming cold (frigid) weather, I’ve been making treats of peanut butter, oats, and fruit. They go in the fridge or freezer and I put them in our suet feeder for the birds or on the ground for your squirrels.

Squirrels are fun. Many bird watchers dislike them. I find it fun to watch them squeeze onto the bird feeder.

Doug Rogers our bluebirds will dive bomb them during nesting season!!! They're fun but I wouldn't want one for a house pet.

They are simply slightly cuter rats. I am not a big fan of them...lol

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I try to push that out of my mind. In grad school, there was a big lab full of large white rats in cages. I hated walking into it.

Squirrels are not for me, although we used to have a very young one who looked cute, but they are of course a rodent.

Kathy, We watched the squirrels stash their acorns in some of our plants before we brought them indoors for the winter. If we hadn’t dug them out, the squirrels would have had a hard time finding them!

Kathy- I like squirrels.  I rescued an injured baby squirrel a few years ago. It became so tamed; it would eat from my hand.  Once it was healthy enough, I released back into nature- where it belonged. It hurt to see it leave.

Joe Mojica awww that was so kind of you to care for the baby squirrel!!! And nice to release it back to nature. Did he stay in a cage in the house or roam freely?

Joe Mojica

Kathy, I did keep it in a large cage while I was at work. When I came home, I would let it run around in a room.  It was very tamed, it would allow me to pick it up and feed it.  I loved it!

I love animals...but just like not wanting the neighbors dog or cat pooping in my yard...I do not like squirrels chewing the bark on my younger trees and killing the tender limbs by eating all the way around the limb.

Glad you enjoy them!!  My Grandma loved feeding her squirrels for decades.

Mike McCann Nebraska Land Broker as much as I love them, I don't want them in the house!!!  I remember when my uncle retired, he would feed all the squirrels in his yard.

Hi Kathy:

Fun post - squirrels are such interesting, and crafty, acrobatic creatures. They will conquer any bird feeder. One good example in our back yard.
