On January 17, 2025, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits declined 0.7% to 1,483,000 units in December of 2024 from 1,493,000 units in November of 2024, and down 3.1% from 1,530,000 in December of 2023. Single family building permits up 1.6% to a rate of 992,000 units in December of 2024, from 976,000 units in November of 2024, and there were 437,000 multifamily building permits issued in December of 2024.
Nationwide housing starts increased 15.8% to 1,499,000 units in December of 2024, from 1,294,000 units in November of 2024 but lower 4.4% from 1,568,000 units in December of 2023. Single family starts were gained 3.3% to a rate of 1,050,000 units in December of 2024 from 1,024,000 in November of 2024, and there were 570,000 multifamily building starts in December of 2024.
Nationwide housing completions dropped 4.8% to 1,544,000 units in December of 2024 from 1,621,000 units in November of 2024, and decreased 0.8% from 1,557,000 units in December of 2023. Single family completions fell 7.4% to a rate of 948,000 units in December of 2024 from 974,000 units in November of 2024, and there were 509,000 multifamily completions in December of 2024.
