Spam Harassment

By

Spam RecordRoughly a week ago, I started to received an accelerated amount of spam phone calls to my cell phone, sometimes 15-20 per day. My cell number must be getting sold over and over since the spam calls are coming from many different states and different numbers in repeat states. There are even calls that are off by one number from my cell number. Many times these calls come around dinner time or sometimes when I happen to leave my phone in another room and then I have to quickly get to the phone, just in case it is an important call and not spam.

In our line of work we rely on working with new people so answering a phone call is important for new business. Luckily there are some that are not spam.

The only good thing about this is, the caller ID is helping me avoid such incoming calls because it will display words like….Spam, Telemarketer, Unknown or Probably Fraud.

Yesterday I decided to silence my ringer and check my cell visually to see if there are non spam calls. My phone is an Android and I do not know what to do at this point.

Have you experienced this sort of barrage of spam calls? If yes is there a way to stop it? Thank you.

Gloria, I completely feel your frustration! Spam calls can be such a nuisance, especially when our business depends on answering calls promptly. Your post does a great job highlighting the challenges we face as real estate professionals. Thank you for sharing your experience—it's a helpful reminder that we’re not alone in dealing with this issue. Hopefully, some solutions come out of this discussion to make life a little easier for us all!

My mom was getting over 80 spam calls per hour.  Verizon suggested that we change her number. She resisted and just stopped answering the phone.  My sister took over, changed the number and the calls dropped out completely.  She did not have spam calls the last month of her life.  I wish we had done it sooner.  I think there is a special place in HELL for those callers.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 Gosh what a horrible thing to have happen to your mother. I wonder if her resistance to changing her number was because the people who know her would have a hard time connecting with her if her number was changed?  Yes to your comment about those callers.

And sorry for your loss.  Take care.

Good afternoon Gloria,

These spam calls have increased and always seem to increase at the first of a year. I pay a fee to AT&T and the spam calls will read spam calls when they ring my phone so I don't answer.

Gloria Todor I get the same thing daily.  I don't answer them if my caller ID says "Likely Spam", and if it does not say "likely Spam" and I answer it, and they don't respond withing a couple of seconds I hang up.

Spam (edible) and Spam phone calls get abused and give abuse. A two edged sword?

Gloria Todor  like you I have been getting them daily for the past year or so. I simply block the calls. Funny you wrote this post I blocked a number in December last year and today I saw six or seven calls from the same spammer in about 45 minutes. Gratefully did not ring or disrupt my day since I blocked them before... I wish I would not even see the blocked calls but that is just me, Endre

Good morning, Gloria... wish I could help. I've lived with the same for a while now (and now texts are also spamming). At this point I just block and delete. Yes, clients will leave a message, but I've found that many prospective leads won't leave a message... they just go on to the next agent on their list. So I keep picking up, hanging up, blocking and deleting.

Ugh, that is so frustrating. I don't think there's a great solution, except to hang up (if you've answered) and perhaps block the number. I don't block the number because a lot of these spam calls seem to use a tool that always changes their number, and they might be calling from a number that is actually legitimate.

OK, something just came to me. Answer the phone and as soon as they start talking try to sell them a house! haha.

Your response got me to thinking, as soon as they start talking ask them if they've been pre-qualified and what their budget is for buying a home.

Hello Gloria,

After multiple changes, my new phone number is private and selectively shared. By using flashing alerts instead of a ringtone, I control who I communicate with.

It seems like there isn't a good solution other than to just ignore them.  I have stopped answering my phone unless I know who is calling.  My assumption these days is that it is spam, but I hope that they will leave a message if they really want to speak to me, haha.

Hi Gloria:

The spam calls and texts are relentless and blocking the numbers, while satisfying at some level, has no impact on continuing to receive calls and texts every day. We won't even get into the spam emails issues! Some of the calls on my phone show as Potential Spam so those don't get answered.

Jeff Dowler, CRS so true it does not have an impact, but as you said satisfying on some level.  And emails very similar. Have a good weekend.
