The Ultimate Plumbing Checklist for a Hassle-Free New Year

Your kitchen sink is one of the most used fixtures in your home during the holidays. From prepping meals to cleaning greasy pans and handling extra water usage, neglecting it could lead to an emergency repair. Don’t worry! We’ve listed some guidelines to help you keep your kitchen sink in good condition.

Prevent plumbing nightmares in 2025 by following this checklist:

  • Keep the Drain Clear

Food scraps, grease, and soap residue are the top culprits of clogged drains. To prevent this, put a drain strainer and weekly flush it with hot water to clear out minor buildups. Use some baking soda and vinegar, too, for extra cleaning power.

  • Inspect for Leaks

Even small leakage can cause serious damage if ignored. Therefore, you need to check it regularly and if you find any issues, contact a plumber to fix the problem before it worsens.

  • Clean the Faucet Aerator

Mineral deposits can clog your faucet’s aerator, which can reduce water flow. To prevent this, remove the aerator, soak it in vinegar for an hour, and brush it gently with a toothbrush to remove the buildup.

  • Assess the Garbage Disposal

If your sink has a garbage disposal, make sure it’s working correctly. Regular maintenance can prolong its lifespan and avoid malfunctions.

  • Test Water Pressure

Low water pressure may be a sign of a clog or a hidden leak. Use a pressure gauge to test your faucet's output, and if it's too low, consider calling a plumber to diagnose the issue.

  • Insulate Your Pipes

If you reside in an area prone to freezing winter temperatures, it's crucial to take steps to avoid your pipes from freezing and potentially bursting. Use foam insulation sleeves to cover any exposed pipes under your sink.

  • Schedule a Professional Inspection

Hire a licensed plumber to inspect your entire plumbing system and detect early signs of potential issues that may arise.

Keeping your kitchen sink in tip-top shape is the key to a hassle-free year. Follow this ultimate plumbing checklist to avoid costly repairs and prevent plumbing headaches before they start.

Hello Tamra - proper upfront plumbing preparation can certainly pay off for those who plan such things.  Some of it is rather basic but it can extend beyond that quite quickly.
