5 Surprising Things You Shouldn't Throw Away (And Why)

When it comes to junk removal, we often think of things like old furniture, broken appliances, or piles of cardboard. But there are some surprising items that you might be tempted to toss—but should actually think twice about. Here are five surprising things you shouldn’t throw away and why:

1. Old Electronics (E-Waste)

You may think it’s easier to just get rid of your old phone, computer, or TV, but electronics contain valuable materials like gold, silver, and copper, and they can be recycled. Throwing them away means those materials end up in a landfill, causing environmental harm. Many places offer e-waste recycling programs, so be sure to properly dispose of these items!

2. Expired Medications

It’s tempting to simply toss expired pills in the trash, but flushing or throwing them away can contaminate water supplies. Instead, take them to a local medication take-back program or a pharmacy that accepts them for safe disposal.

3. Old Clothing and Shoes

Rather than throwing away your old clothes, donate them! Many charities accept gently used items, and even those with wear and tear can sometimes be recycled into new fabrics or turned into cleaning rags. If your clothing is beyond saving, look for textile recycling programs in your area.

4. Mattresses

Old mattresses take up space in landfills and can be difficult to dispose of. Many mattress companies and local recycling programs offer mattress recycling, where components like metal springs and foam can be reused. In some places, you can even donate a mattress if it’s still in decent condition!

5. Building Materials and Scrap Wood

Whether it’s leftover paint, scrap wood, or unused tiles, many of these materials can be repurposed for other projects or safely recycled. Before tossing building materials, consider donating them to places like Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores, where they can be sold and reused for home repairs.

Nelson Huggins I just got rid of two old computers, along with monitors a couple of weeks ago.  Our dump has a container specifically for electronic equipment and make it easy to recycle it.

We typically recycle as much as possible.  Even if things are "good enough" to donate many times our animal shelter will take it for mom cats and dogs to use with litters.

That's a great way to use unwanted things. Thank you so much for the comment.

Hello Nelson - thoughtful behavior can be shown when clutter is under control as well as when reusing, reducing and recycling are effectively utilized.

These are all great ideas. There is usually someplace to bring things we no longer need/want/can fix.
