Every once in a while I catch a trivia section on a local Philadelphia radio station where a story may be read from a local paper from years ago or details given of something that was aired on the radio years ago. Recently I found out that Bill Haley of Bill Haley and His Comets had a connection to Delaware County.
I
looked Bill Haley up on Wikipedia and sure enough there were two ways he was connected to Delaware County.
First, when he was seven years old his parents moved to Boothwyn, Bethel Township where he spent his early years until he left home as a teenager to go on the road to find himself. Yodeling and singing along the way. And during those early years it was documented that he played music at an event at age 13 at Bethel High School.
Then at some point later on, he returned to Delaware County where he was the musical director of WPWA a local radio station in Chester PA for a handful of years.
Another interesting twist to this story is, that upon reading more of the details about the band members I found out that one of our past clients had an uncle who was a long time band member with Bill Haley! Amazing!
What a truly small world it is! Now when I hear Rock Around the Clock it will be with a different awareness and a joyful feeling of connection to Delaware County.
