Groundhog Day 2025 What's it Going to be?

Groundhog Day 2023 Descension in the Ranks

In the Groundhog Day tradition, the groundhog wakes up early on the annual Feb. 2 holiday and looks around for its shadow.

If it sees its shadow, winter will persist for another six weeks. If the groundhog doesn’t see its shadow, then spring will come early.

In Gobbler's Nob PA, Punxsutawney Phil, probably annoyed at being rousted from bed so early, and after almost biting one of the assembled dignitaries, predicted another 6 weeks of winter.

Chuckles XI, his cousin in Connecticut made his annual appearance at the Lutz Children’s Museum in Manchester with a prediction of an early spring.

So, who is one to believe?

Common sense would suggest that always trust the ones closest to you which would mean we will not have that dreaded 6 extra weeks of winter. Of course, in years past, when the shortened forecast was given, we got enough snow in that shortened period to wish it had been drawn out over a longer time.

It's no secret that the flow in Connecticut is never the same as the rest of the country so could Chuckles just be trying to be different as well?

Only time will tell, but with snow expected to hit the state this evening, along with the blisterng temps in the single digits, one would wonder if Chuckles is just offering wishful thinking. and when March does come in will there be votes of impeachment for Chuckles?

Hello Ed, My cousin drove 4 hours with her husband to see Phil and what a story she call to tell me this morning,  Music and bands started playing at 5 am.  Lots of food trucks and stands selling things.  Even red stove top hats with a groundhog you could pull out LOL

Will Hamm   If it is anything like the Bill Murray movie, it had to be a fun day.

Hi Ed... I posted a statistic on my post this morning that said in over 130+ years Phil has been accurate about 35% of time. Why listen to some rodent? Meantime, he predicted six more weeks of winter and here in Charlotte we are expecting temperatures 10-20 degrees above average for at least the coming week. Your picture of the groundhogs is very cute.

Nina Hollander, Broker   he's only slightly less accurate than most weather forecasters, without making that big money

I am hoping for a mild winter regardless of the groundhog predictions.

Have an outstanding week.

Roy, it will just be one day at a time and we have to accept it.

Hi Ed:

I read about Phil's prediction before seeing your post...but given his record isn't all that great who knows. Maybe Chuckles' forecast IS accurate. Time will show the reality.

Jeff

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 - I also posted today about Groundhog day. Completely different than you of course. But I have to say, I love this tradition.

By the way, it is now 70 degrees in Flower Mound, TX. Expecting 75 degrees by 3 p.m.

Who are you going to believe? That is the question.

Have a great Sunday!

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754  All I know it is the coldest winter we have had in years.  The funny thing was his handlers said his predictions were better than AI. I never heard that before. My money is on Phil this year as much as I am wishing for an early spring

It's going to be winter until March, sort of like it always is in Georgia.  I've lived places where it lasts longer and never really happens.

As a child growing up, I thought my mom had gone a little nutty when she talked about a groundhog seeing his shadow and having an early Spring. Most of the time he (Punx Phil, for short) did NOT see his shadow so it was predicted we would have six additional LONG weeks of winter.

It just didn't make sense... Seems like it would be the opposite. Oh, well.

Yesterday in Mississippi (February 1) was gloriously sunny and beautiful. I knew exactly what that meant... that darn rodent was going to see his shadow.

I was right, naturally. :)

I'm so thankful I live in the south, where winter is tolerable.

Hello Ed - each February 2, I do wonder what happens around Gobbler's Knob and Punxsutawney Pennsylvania the rest of the year.  Mind you, it's momentary, as I don't spend a lot of time on the subject.  And the prediction forecast is typically gone fairly quickly too.

Hello Ed,  as it turned out, almost to the day, we did not need Phil's prediction for 6 more weeks.  We have had more winter in the past week than the 2 months prior.  Be safe stay healthy.  m

What great pics Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 . Up here in North Dakota we would be happy if Spring did come in 6 weeks. On a normal year we expect Spring midMay.

I haven’t really thought about Groundhog Day but let’s hope it’s a warm prediction, especially in the East Coast and Midwest.
