Real Estate Sales Advice- The Importance Of Monthly Goals

The benefit of being an independent contractor is you may do whatever you wish. The downside of being an independent contractor is nobody is telling you what to do. For those of us who came from a non-sales background (education for me) having goals provides needed structure. Here are some tips I use for setting monthly goals...

1) Monthly targets are the "Goldilocks" of the goal trio-- Though important, individuals can get lost in the space of yearly goals. Not on track? No worries, I will work hard "later". On the other end, weekly goals can get crushed with one bad day. Hence a month is the prefect compromise.

2) Set aside Time for goal setting-- I take a day at the end of the month to A) review that month and B) set goals for the new month.

3) Be realistic, and just a bit scary-- If the goal isn't a bit of a stretch you aren't doing at right. At the same time though it should be realistic.

4) Have production goals that are measurable-- I count new listings, buyers, price improvements, pending, and closings.

5) Have a reward in place--Nothing over the top, but something that acknowledges 22-25 days of solid production.

6) Make goals inline with YOUR business plan verses copying others-- We are all running our own race. The key to the monthly plan is to keep you on pace with YOUR business plan. Don't get lost following the herd!

Early on I worked real estate part time. At that moment I didn't think a monthly plan would provide any benefit. In truth regardless of where your career is you can benefit from solid monthly goals. Will Hamm while it is wise to have clear, realistic goals, I do not put mine down in writing on a yearly, monthly, weekly, daily bases.  That has not worked well for me, BUT for some it is a must in order to stay on track.
