California Dreamin’

As Reality Continues to Clear

The Air. . .

California is a big place.  It’s diverse as some know.  Or assume.  Some, maybe much, of such things have elements of truth.  Likely similar sorts of stuff can be said about that place where you live.  Or have previously resided.

Recently, I heard a reference about a nearby Southern California neighborhood.  Although I don’t live in that community, I am aware of some aspects of it.

Grains of salt, morsels of information and tidbits of truth or mere oversights continue to tell me that additional investigation may be needed.  It's true geographically and in many other ways.

I continue to wonder, is expert opinion an oxymoron? I digress.  And, of course, local expertise of any kind comes into the thought process.  Real estate, for sure, but my wondering extends beyond those boundaries of this particular ponderment.  Why is that some think citing sources are suspicious.  The cynical side of me provides some clues but aren’t we curious about many sorts of things.

Digging deeper may be natural for experts in excavation, but can it serve each of us better on a regular basis as we sift through news, data, statistics, evidence, reports, posts, analysis and other forms of communication.

Be curious.  Be quizzical. Be inquisitive.  And pausing before expressing what's on one's mind can be useful. And simply, wiser. And that's a point to consider.

But be aware and beware of those professing to be all knowing - there are far too many examples that you are experiencing opinion.  And, yes, I have opined more than once about the subject.  Butt (and the bolding/italicizing and use of the word is once again intentional), I guess you might be aware of it.  Or is that a bridge too far?

What is it like where you live, where the property listings for sale dot the MLS map. No one, not RTZ or the Wizard of Oz or an AI bot knows the local real estate market better than someone who lives in the community, drives daily through the zip codes. You have experienced, lived worked and played in the local area.

I can tell you where is the best place to fish for brook trout or small mouth bash. My favorite menu order item at the Chinese restaurant across from my office is #37. (Garlic chicken & rice, the bonus egg roll). You know tid bits of local information from A to Z.

You know and can share valuable information about California best. Wearing moccasins used to walk it, a pair of eyes and ears to absorb and recount yesterday, today and some pretty good predictions of tomorrow. How to describe Michael? Aware. Reflective. Alive. Great post!

Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573 - spot on!  "Local" continues to make a significant difference regardless of the "realness" of the term.

Michael Jacobs  Always do your research. There are many available places to find answers. Truthfully, your post, besides learning to think for yourself and discovering knowledge, and not being an emotional thinker, reminds me of the Mama and Papas song.  California Dreaming on this cold winter day. We have been experiencing ice storms and some Snow is expected this weekend and next week -- Love that song

Hannah Williams - research can help at times when rabbit hole avoidance is part of the strategy.  As for the song, I have had some of this post in draft for a while before reading about The Grammy show presentation earlier this week where the song was played.  Many sorts of things combine to create experiences and so it seems, AR posts at times.  May your weekend be cozy.

Michael Jacobs I did not watch the Grammys and was unaware of the presentation. Thank you for the info. I will have to try to catch up on Hulu or YouTube while I am snowed in this week. I seemed to have missed quite a lot  in the last several week

It is getting harder and harder to identify an "expert" opinion these days, unfortunately.

It doesn't mean we shouldn't continue to get to the truth.

Something that I really need to keep reminding myself:

And pausing before expressing what's on one's mind can be useful.

Sharon Tara - while not much of a soft drink expert, I do recall a Coca-Cola slogan that claimed, Coca Cola was "the pause that refreshes".

Cheers, Michael! (See what I did there?!!)

So, I'm with you 100% - experts are those we run from in my neck of the woods - expert witnesses, especially! We have a local inspector who is known as the expert witness who loves to sell multiple inspections by claiming that the house has 'failed inspection' and double- and triple-dipping on inspections for the same buyer!

As for your quote. With recent happenings in the Rain, I have to agree that...

"pausing before expressing what's on one's mind can be useful. And simply, wiser. And that's a point to consider."

Debe Maxwell, CRS - following my own advice could lead to ponderific results as I regularly do a self-examination of my ability to pause.  As for recent activity around ActiveRainLand - we have both been around here for long enough to realize the news cycle of such times can be relatively short.  There seems to a bruHaHa for those who revel in such things.

Hi, Michael Jacobs There are a lot to ponder about California as it's a very large state with many sites to see. The only one who can claim to be "All knowing" is God Almighty. There are no perfect humans on this earth.

Good morning Michael. I often use the term "California Dreaming" when commenting on posts of John Pusa and Jeff Dowler because of the high prices. That said I have done business in Corning California where "rustic" may be a better term. Californina has something to offer for every dream. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - you're right, diversity in pricing is apparent in California.  And while affordability and many sorts of things associated with it are subject to interpretation, it can be "found" here as well as other places not typically expected.   I hope your Sunday is super.  🏈

Good Morning, Michael Jacobs    I chuckled at the statement is an expert opinion an oxymoron,

I guess it would depend on the size of the ego offering it.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 - in real estate as well as this bigger community around any of us, the opportunities to see such sizes are abundant.  And seizing upon those possibilities may be worthy of multiple sighs.

Interesting pondering.  When I read your posts, numerous quotes or statements by others come to mind.  This particular posting resurfaced this thought:  "The first rule when you are in a hole is to quit digging." My sense is sometimes one needs to look around before continuing to dig.

Feb 09, 2025 07:47 AM
Michael Jacobs

Leanne Smith - your comment reminds me of signs/warnings that I have "seen" from companies in many developed areas.  They can be used to reinforce the importance of contacting the proper authorities prior to any construction project so as to not interfere with underground utilities.  I imagine it would be quite different in your area with its vast amount of undeveloped land.

Feb 09, 2025 09:05 AM
Leanne Smith

Out here we do have various gas pipelines, many unmarked, and it is always advisable to call to make sure digging will not break a line.

Leanne Smith - thank you for filling me in with that bit of information.  Digging deeper does help as does in-depth local knowledge.

Ah, a ponderment... "Why is that some think citing sources are suspicious. "

I would hope that everybody would be open to looking/examining facts but I have been noticing of late that there is too much emotion and very little logic or analytical thinking.  Thanks for this post Mr. Michael Jacobs

Michael, It is impossible to be a full expert on one area as we all experience a place in different ways.  Yes keep open to learning as places keep changing also..

Now to the title California Dreamin'

A good song to hear, thanks!

Call a Marana neighbor, I'm THERE!

I've always been leary of the word expert...even when a professional may be.  For some reason it makes me feel like there is no more improvement to be made, and that...well, that's never true.

I appreciate these words, and will hold them dear,

"Be curious.  Be quizzical. Be inquisitive.  And pausing before expressing what's on one's mind can be useful. And simply, wiser."

Cara Marcelle Mancuso - I believe there is good reason to be skeptical of those who self-identify as an expert.  Maybe I would feel more comfortable and confident if they would claim to be an expert-in-continuous-training.
