Extreme Low Temps in North Idaho Forecasted !

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Sandpoint Realty LLC DB36113

North Idaho is forecasted for extreme low temps this coming week after Super Bowl Sunday.   Wunderground Weather is the service I have come to most trust with their predictions.  As unpredictable as the weather may be.  The below chart for Naples Idaho, which sits between Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry Idaho.

What we should be concerned about and very cognizant of, is the 5 to 6 days of not going above freezing temperatures, in North Idaho.   This means, should your pipes freeze during the extreme lows at night, the day temperatures never help in unfreezing the pipes.  The freezing pipes with the temps remaining below freezing only grow more difficult to thaw.

Being aware of this possible issue solves the ugly possibility of frozen water pipes.  Simply having a drip of water, be sure both hot and cold dripping, at every faucet keeps the water moving enough to keep from freezing.  I personally feel more comfortable when in single digits keeping it at a steady dribble rather than a drip.  Also with the single digits I will open cabinet doors to allow heat into other wise cooler areas.

Make it a safe winter in North Idaho.  Be aware of your surroundings and how best to prepare for these type of temperatures.  Be safe, stay healthy.

Hello Mark - location definitely matters when discussing as well as defining cold temperatures.  Brr - sums up my initial response and likely an impression that will last a bit longer.  Stay as warm as you are able.

Hi Mark- Our pipes in Houston are in the attic so we're all too familiar with burst water pipes...and we don't have cold temps like you!!! In 2021 when we had snow and ice, there were so many burst pipes, plumbers couldn't get enough supplies!  Stay warm!

I have some rentals Kathy.  Not only do I need to stay constantly on top of tenants to leave the water dripping I personally need be cognizant of which way wind is blowing from.  One unit has pipes in the attic as you do and if the wind, on rare occasion, comes from SW I need take extra measures.  All good at the moment.  Take care.  m
