What's Not to love twice over?

By
Real Estate Agent with Wayne M Martin

Debe Maxwell, CRS and Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty issued a February challenge about what you love. Debe even poked me suggesting she knew what I would write about if I participated. She was spot on.

In 2016 JoAnn and I retired and knew where we were going and what we would do. We sold our home in Florida, packed up our stuff and moved to an apartment in the sky in downtown Chicago. Here is the why.

In 1990, we moved from Long Grove, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago to Palm City, Florida to be closer to JoAnn's parents. As we were exiting Chicago my son Bradley looked out of the rear window and said "I'll be back". He continued to vow he would return after graduating from college. We thought it was funny. Not so funny! In May of 2002 he graduated from the University of Florida. Two days later Brad and I were in a rented van with his possessions driving to downtown Chicago and his studio apartment. The joke was on us.

So wanting to be closer to our son we followed. Also in 2016, he married Stephanie and expanded our family. One evening they came to our place and presented JoAnn with a wrapped box. Inside were a pair of miniature blue Nike shoes. And on June 2, 2018 the family expanded with the birth of our grandson Bradley Jr. Yes, you guessed it we were the primary care takers while they worked. We became very attached. We thought we would have more time to ourselves once he started school.

Another surprise on March 17, 2022 family expansion continued with the birth of our granddaughter Vivian. Yep, we became the week day caretakers for both. Vivian immediately developed a close relationship with JoAnn. Papa's little prince Bradley and princess Vivian consumed our time as they vied for our attention.

The city was changing after Covid and we chose to move to the suburbs, actually exurbia called Oswego where we purchased a townhome. The what is not to love continues with frequent weekend visits. Little Bradley claims one bedroom as his and Vivian claims the other. Parents are allowed for sleeping purposes.

And that is what this retired guy loves! So this is my submission for the February challenge.

The benefit of being retired was we were free to move. Had my son stayed in Florida we would not have moved.

Wayne- I totally get it!!! I'll bet young Bradley and Vivian are keeping you and Joann young!!!  When we returned to Houston it was to be closer to may family here and Larry's in KS and Omaha. I miss FL but don't regret our move back.

I grew up with my grandparents around and I feel very fortunate!!!

Wayne, you're telling a story that is very familiar to me since many of our clients are retirees, or close to it.  We find there are two major reasons patio homes go on the market for sale:  health issues, and a need to be nearer grandkids.   A few years ago in the local 55+ community someone bought a home to be nearer her daughter and grandkids.  Withing 9 months the daughter had a job transfer, so the owner put her home on the market to follow.  The magnetism of the little ones is VERY strong :)

Hello Wayne - I may not be as wise as Debe Maxwell, CRS (although my wisea$$ ways may carry some commentary).  However, I too, could forecast that family could be a fine opportunity for you to share some love this month.   And this challenge entry is classic - I'm sure Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty might also provide a slap on the back in agreement.

While some dreary days I long for the sunny days of Florida and our home there. Then, I think about the grandkids and forget about Florida.

Good morning, Wayne... so lovely that you can live close to your grandchildren and participate in their growth. That was not something we were able to do (or really wanted to do). Nonetheless, we are close to all four of our grandchildren, all of whom are now adults.

I knew in 2002 when he graduated from college and went to Chicago that we would be back! Some things are intuitive.

Family is so important, Wayne Martin

Your story reminds me of our story.

My wife was at a point in her career where could retire with full medical benefits. So she decided to do exactly that. When our oldest daughter and her husband subsequently came to visit, my wife told them that she planned to retire. My daughter said, "That's great. You are going to be a grandmother and I know you will want to spend lots of time with your new granddaughter." That is how she announced that she was pregnant. We were all overwhelmed with joy!

Are you at the point of being overwhelmed with your granddaughter yet? We come close at times but it passes quickly when one of them jumps on my lap.

Aww, I loved your photo and the story, Wayne! You know we would love to have you (and your grands if they're still there on Tuesdays) join us on Tuesdays! Every now and then we are blessed with a grand on our calls and it just makes my heart smile. You all are truly blessed to be able to do what you do. And, your son & his wife are incredibly thankful you are there and they are able to keep the children out of day care.

Thank you so much for putting a smile on my face today, Wayne!

We now live in exurbia and my son still lives in downtown Chicago, so daily watching of the grandkids is no longer. My grandson is in the first grade and my granddaughter is in a great preschool which she loves. Our duties are now mostly weekends like the one coming up. We are ready and anxiously waiting.
