Motivational Monday…Words

My Mini-me was over recently and we were discussing words. She’d mentioned chocolate cake and I responded…That’s one of my favorite words!!!

She gave me a quizzical look and said…you mean you like to eat chocolate cake!

I responded…Well, yes I do but I love to hear the words chocolate cake. Certain words have a nice ring to them and fond memories.

She asked me what other words I love to hear and  the first one that popped out of my head was JOY.

“...a feeling of great pleasure and happiness.”

Another one is KINDNESS…

“…the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.”

Then it occurred to me that I talk a lot about the words I like to hear. What about the words I’m not fond of? Just for fun, I thought about those words…

Snarkiness-having a rudely critical tone or manner

Condescending- showing or characterized by a patronizing or superior attitude toward others

Arrogance-an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions

Words make a difference and as my high school principal used to say…A word said is a word dead.  You can’t take it back.

Words, attitude and intent…careful when you mix them together.

A recipe crafted with a handful of understanding, a cup of kindness, and a pinch of acceptance will create a dish that’s cherished and enjoyed by all.

But if the ingredients include a dash of arrogance blended with a bowl of condescension, the result is a volatile mix—one that leaves a bitter aftertaste, spoiling the experience. In the end, the dish is discarded and forever avoided.

Good morning Kathy. Like your choice of words, good and bad. It reminds me to take my brain out of park before I put my mouth into drive! Sometimes I forget and regret. Enjoy your day.

Good morning, Kathy.
I love this post. I must say you and Mini-Me have some interesting conversations.

I'd never thought of the use of words in the context of a recipe, but it is totally appropriate. Just like in cooking, once an ingredient (or a word) is added, you can’t take it back. You can try to dig the wrong ingredient (or word) out, but you never get it all, and the result is never quite right. Unlike a recipe, though, when you're talking about relationships with people you can't throw it out and start over. Once the damage is done, it's done.

Carol Williams remind me to tell you about the time about 4 years ago when she learned Uncle Larry had a daughter!

I have thrown out a few pans of chocolate I was tempering  and had to start over.

Good morning, Kathy... I always say be careful what you say and how you say it... words can be like toothpaste... once it's out of the tube, it's very hard to squeeze it back in. Great advice: Words, attitude and intent…careful when you mix them together.

Nina Hollander, Broker the toothpaste analogy is a favorite of mine.  We have to choose our words carefully.

Hi Kathy,

It definitely is a good idea to think about the words that you're planning on saying before you say them!

Doug Rogers I have to be very careful NOT to use the words chocolate cake too often or I would have a huge piece sitting in front of me right now.

Hello Kathy Streib - we not only hear the words - we feel them. Indeed, once a razor tongue lashes out, we cannot take the words back. They cut, and often they cut deep.

Now, about chocolate cake 🎂??

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist  a few weeks ago it was chocolate cake day and I was so focused on it, I went to two stores just to find a piece.

When they coined the phrase "tongue lashing" they knew what they were talking about.

It isn't always just the words but the manner in which they are delivered as well. Voice tone matters also,

Hello Kathy,

Your recipe of kindness reminds me of the story of Oliver Twist.

The line “Please, sir, I want some more” from Charles Dickens’s novel Oliver Twist is deeply evocative. It captures the raw desperation in Oliver’s voice as he pleads for more gruel, highlighting his acute hunger and yearning for sustenance. The scene is painted vividly, allowing readers to feel the weight of Oliver’s plight and the chilling reality of his impoverished condition.

Happy Monday Kathy!  And oh it's so true - you can't take back some words or attitudes so don't go there to begin with.  My Mom used to say something like- chose your words carefully and you will thank yourself later.
