Herd That's Going to Hurt!

Several weeks ago on Highway 18, a mini-Cooper encountered two cows in the middle of the road after a wide curve, during the day, moving at 65 miles per hour. Neither of the cows survived or the car, but thank goodness the driver walked away from the accident with only a few scratches.

It's nerve-wracking enough to carefully watch the sides of the roads for wildlife, like mountain lions, deer, foxes, coyotes, roadrunners, rabbits, crossing to avoid collisions but black cows are not visible at night until much closer and they are slow to react and are akin to brick walls. One evening, a herd was in the back yard, we heard them but didn't see them.

The law is outdated, archaic and in my opinion, a lazy man's way of cattle ranching. Fence them in for theirs and the public's safety! Hit a bull or a cow in a vehicle and not only will the driver pay for that animal but also future, projected generations of that animal's lineage. It's true!

Open Range Law needs updating due to the inherent dangers that are posed by cattle roaming, at will, on two lane hiways and back roads. Traffic has dramatically increased and so have speed limits since this law was implemented back at the turn of the century. Not only are the people driving trucks and cars at risk, but so are motorcyclists and bicyclists.

It isn't always enough to flash the head lights at night so others are aware of a serious, potentially life or death situation further ahead either. Some motorists are just blinded and return the favor with their high beams thinking a cop is ahead, rather than bovine slowly crossing the road at a leisurely pace.

Again, the Open Range Law needs to be changed for public safety in my opinion. There are no more one lane roads or steam engines on roadways, byways and highways! Does your state have open range laws in place and what are your thoughts?

Hello Wanda,  We have open range in some areas and wish that would change.  I watch out when I am driving in the dark in the mountains.  I watch out for buffalo in Yellowstone also.

Thanks for telling us about this dangerous situation. I would vote for the needed fencing.

This is one of the reasons I don't like driving at night. It's not that I can't see well at night; I just know that sudden, unexpected danger lurks in the dark.

Regarding open-range, it doesn't seem like a motorist should be responsible for hitting an animal when it wanders into a roadway. It seems that is a risk of running an open-range operation.

Reminds me when I was driving in West Germany in the 70's.  Had about 400 sheep right in front of me. Thanks for sharing it.

Have a super fantastic week!

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! we have issues with deer crossing roads around here.  Even though they are much smaller than a cow, the will total a car.

Deer are pretty much taking over my secondary market. Driving after dark is not for the faint of heart!

Good afternoon Wanda,

We mainly have deer to content with but in areas that have ranches in Texas, cattle can be an issue. It doesn't seem like a motorist should be responsible for hitting an animal when it wanders into a roadway.

Yes, your state has open range laws as well, Will Hamm. Thirty-five years ago, I knew a student who hit a bull on the way home for the holidays. He switched cars with his mom when he went back!

I would vote for the same but it will take quite a few people to step up and demand cattle to be fenced in, especially in high traffic areas, Roy.

Wishing you and Dolores a wonderful evening!

During the day, it's easier to see animals on the road but in the evening, it's hit or miss, Carol Williams. One night, coming home from Colorado, I hit a female elk in Fish Lake National Forest and it totaled my car, thank goodness my mom and 2 boys were not injured!

Mike had one that ran right into the side of his truck on a dark highway, going about 55 mph, . Crazy!

We have encounted a mountain lion crossing the road, while night driving about 10 miles from our house, Doug Rogers. Glad it didn't follow us home! 👀

The laws can cost a driver A LOT of moolah when it comes to cattle on the roadways, Dorie Dillard Austin TX. Glad I seldom drive at night anymore!

Souds like the owners are looking for someone else to take care of their herd. It is definitely much cheaper.

Wow, that is really scary and I can't even imagine coming around a corner at 65 mph and seeing something in the way that I could not avoid hitting.

Logic says to fence them in, for everyone's safety but apparently that is too much to ask Ed Silva, 203-206-0754! The other day, Mike diverted a young herd of cattle from trespassing into our property and destroying the landscape. :::sigh:::

One early morning, we were going fishing at Otter Creek Reservior and a classic truck with a boat that matched the color scheme was in front of us. A cow stepped out in front of the driver, he slammed on the brakes and the boat came around, hitting the side of the truck causing severe damage!

Wouldn't have happened if the cow was behind a fence, Brian England.

Hi Wanda- we had a similar problem when we lived in Northern VA..people hitting deer. One woman was seriously injured. On a lighter note...a cow and goat got loose on the first day of the Rodeo last week.
