The first words out of my past client’s mouth when I answered her call, "it's so nice to hear your voice," were such a pleasure to hear.
I had called the other day and left a message and it was nice to hear her voice as well…it’s been a number of years. I have sent multiple emails and handwritten cards in accordance with my “staying in touch with past clients” plan. And we have exchanged multiple emails about the housing market conditions, additional purchase opportunities, and more in response to her periodic email requests.
But there is something special about talking in person on the phone, instead of sending multiple text messages and emails that are so much a part of our business, and no doubt our personal lives, too. They are important, for sure, but so much more impersonal in some ways.
That’s not to say that text messages and emails are not a viable, and valuable, part of our marketing business, and to stay in touch with our past clients and our sphere. Staying in touch is key, and I suspect most past clients appreciate it. I've had several repeat clients who commented on their appreciation of my staying in touch with them in different ways.
Email and texting these days may be a preferred form of communication by many, both senders and recipients, for a variety of reasons. It’s easy, it can be done any time of day or night, it can be automated, and you don’t have to talk with anyone.
Heaven forbid having a personal conversation on the telephone! Just a little sarcasm…
But therein lies the issue…not talking with a client takes away from the more personal and emotional components of interpersonal communication, and the added value of a personal exchange of questions and answers...having a dialogue. Plus there are the feel-good emotions of simply talking with someone and having a pleasant conversation...rather than an exchange of brief texts and emails.
And like a handwritten card, a phone conversation is not so common and so it stands out, and perhaps is more meaningful to the recipient.
It goes beyond past clients, but could include buyer and seller prospects. And of course our ActiveRain community. And maybe other business professionals.
I certainly do not do as good as job with staying in touch with personal phone calls as I could, and I need to work on that. How about you?!
I hope to hear more comments like “It’s so nice to hear your voice” and to be able to say that as well. And I wish that for you, too!
