It's So Nice to Hear Your Voice

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of California, Inc. CA DRE #01490977

The first words out of my past client’s mouth when I answered her call, "it's so nice to hear your voice," were such a pleasure to hear.

I had called the other day and left a message and it was nice to hear her voice as well…it’s been a number of years. I have sent multiple emails and handwritten cards in accordance with my “staying in touch with past clients” plan. And we have exchanged multiple emails about the housing market conditions, additional purchase opportunities, and more in response to her periodic email requests.

But there is something special about talking in person on the phone, instead of sending multiple text messages and emails that are so much a part of our business, and no doubt our personal lives, too. They are important, for sure, but so much more impersonal in some ways.

That’s not to say that text messages and emails are not a viable, and valuable, part of our marketing business,  and to stay in touch with our past clients and our sphere. Staying in touch is key, and I suspect most past clients appreciate it. I've had several repeat clients who commented on their appreciation of my staying in touch with them in different ways.

Email and texting these days may be a preferred form of communication by many, both senders and recipients, for a variety of reasons. It’s easy, it can be done any time of day or night, it can be automated, and you don’t have to talk with anyone.

Heaven forbid having a personal conversation on the telephone! Just a little sarcasm…

Emailing

But therein lies the issue…not talking with a client takes away from the more personal and emotional components of interpersonal communication, and the added value of a personal exchange of questions and answers...having a dialogue. Plus there are the feel-good emotions of simply talking with someone and having a pleasant conversation...rather than an exchange of brief texts and emails.

And like a handwritten card, a phone conversation is not so common and so it stands out, and perhaps is more meaningful to the recipient.

It goes beyond past clients, but could include buyer and seller prospects. And of course our ActiveRain community. And maybe other business professionals.

I certainly do not do as good as job with staying in touch with personal phone calls as I could, and I need to work on that. How about you?!

I hope to hear more comments like “It’s so nice to hear your voice” and to be able to say that as well. And I wish that for you, too!

A wholehearted YES to your message, Jeff Dowler, CRS! I immediately had to think back to pandemic times when Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 would do walk'n'talks multiple times a week. We planned morning walks in our respective neighborhoods and talked about life and Real Estate. We still do so now although it's more talking than walking. 😅But I always love to hear Margaret's voice!

What a great idea to walk and talk with Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400. No doubt there were some very special conversations, and still are!

Good afternoon Jeff Dowler, CRS ,

You are so right..its so nice to visit with someone on the phone and have a meaningful dialogue! We have gotten out of the habit! I still like face-to-face the best but phone would have to be my second top way to communicate.

In person is certainly very special but may not always be feasible. Phone calls are certainly a wonderful alternative to face to face Dorie Dillard Austin TX

No doubt there are times when a text or email works well, too!

Jeff, I really appreciate your post.  I do the same with cards and emails as they are quicker and you get them all accomplished.  Calling always seems to take a back seat, maybe for fear of a never ending phone call?  But that's my thought, not yours!

Good point Jan Green - Scottsdale, AZ  There is nothing wrong with staying in touch with cards, emails and texts...it depends on the situation and the person.

I have always liked a phone or in person conversation over a text or email because I have seen too many times where the tone of the email or text is sometimes misinterpreted.

Feb 10, 2025 05:33 PM
Jeff Dowler, CRS

That's an excellent point about the possibility of tone being misinterpreted in a text of email Buzz Mackintosh  I suspect we have all had that experience either as sender or recipient.

Hi Jeff- Love your post!!!  I'm awful about keeping in touch via phone calls with a few exceptions. It's on my ToDo list for the year and I'm making headway.

Texting is a lot easier for many reasons however nothing can take the place of hearing the voice of someone over the phone...even if only for a few minutes.

Feb 10, 2025 06:19 PM
Jeff Dowler, CRS

Thank you Kathy Streib  I'm sure we can all do a better job of staying in touch...friends OR past clients...with phone calls.

Texting IS easy and it can be done any time, and there are certainly times when that's all that's needed to give someone a quick response or provide an update.

Good morning, Jeff... I've never ended a conversation with a past client or a friend in the business without a big smile on my face. But like many of us, I could do better at staying in touch by phone. At least I'm good on the personal notes and cards!

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker  There really IS something special about a personal phone call, especially if personal contact has been limited for some time. I bet that smile comes across in your phone conversation!

Hello Jeff - there are countless methods of communication available.  So sometimes connecting an actual voice to a message carries some special significance.  Good example of staying in touch and maintaining top of mind awareness too.

Thank you Michael Jacobs. I think hearing someone's voice does take on a special meaning, especially when there has been no or limited contact for a period of time.

I so agree Jeff - that personal phone call from time to time makes a huge difference both for the client and us.  It makes me smile thinking of all the times my clients are so happy to hear from me and some are surprised as they've not been used to that personal touch.

This was a fun read and a great post Jeff. It reminds me of my post last week talking about Bob’s called me out of the blue and how nice it was to hear his voice and have a conversation instead of our usual typing banter

I like you I’m a big fan of actually calling people and writing personal notes. I get a lot of voicemails these days but occasionally I’ll get a text or even a call back saying it was great to hear from you. Thanks for the call

I think most people appreciate a personal call, at least now and then, in lieu of an email or text message.

That must have been a fun conversation with Bob!
