Key To Success - Staying Balanced and Calm

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Retired Broker/Owner AZ Broker BR030809000

Back in the early 90's I was involved in an intensive leadership course that went on for weeks and weeks. One of my favorite experiences was the High Ropes Course.  It scared  the living bajeebers out of me! They roped us up and then one by one we had to lean over a cliff - kind of like we were going to take off like a bird. I didn't handle it well on the first try but by my 2nd try I realized that we were totally safe. What a freeing feeling looking out over a gorgeous valley 'flying'. Well not really flying but it felt like time was suspended.

A few years later when I was by then staffing and speaking at the course, one of the students (who was a pretty big guy) was roped up - AND had this idea that he was supposed to jump off and climb back up. OMG you can imagine our surprise when we saw him go over the cliff!

Thankfully he was just fine. He came up smiling thinking that THAT  was the best thing ever! From then on we gave better directions about how High Ropes Course was all about Balancing Oneself and Life!  Imagine that!

The 50 foot telephone pole was  another one of my absolute favorite of the ropes course! We had to climb up the pole and then stand up on both feet, all the while the pole was swaying (seemed like a LOT of swaying) due to nerves!  At the bottom of the pole I could hear everybody cheering me on and saying stuff like - you can do it Anna, go for it Anna.  So I did. Once I got balanced I stood up tall looking out over the valley and thought WOW this is amazing!

What I forgot to do was reach out for the golden ring which was a couple of feet away!! Instead, at some point I lost my balance, tried to regain it but alas I could not. I remember thinking at the time that I had failed the exercise.  But I knew I really didn't. I had many more chances to climb the pole over the years of teaching and staffing and it was a blast!

What I learned was the more I stayed balanced throughout the entire process, and kept my mind calm, I could accomplish anything!

I've brought it forward to this moment and from time to time when I need a little balance in my life I look at this picture  - and remember the lesson.  It's all about Balance and Staying Calm in every situation!  And for those of you that know how much I've been dealing with lately this is a skill set that has come in very handy!

Friends  over the years have asked me so many times - how do you stay so calm?  I want to know your secret!   And that's when I bring out the 'High Ropes' stories!!

What's my key to  a successful life and business?

Staying Balanced and Calm!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten OMG, there is no way I would ever do that !  I swim and dance and even do a little yoga, but that kind of bungee jumping is not for me. What is that saying? It takes all types to make the world go around. You are a brave lady I think my hair would have turned white - Bravo

Hi Hannah Williams it's not for everyone for sure.  But at that point in my life I loved it!  Now, well I'm laughing about even thinking of climbing that 50ft pole!  The key is stay balanced and calm no matter what.  These days I find listening to classical music, walking and meditating does the trick  for me.  Good for you for doing yoga and dance and swimming.  That sounds like fun!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I don't like heights either and I climbed up on a high dive when I was much, much younger and stood there frozen. There was no way I was going to dive, and I wasn't going to climb down the ladder eventually I jumped and never ever went up on a high dive again

Yes I remember the HIGH DIVING board Hannah Williams !  Scared me at first but somehow I got over it.  Lots of kids didn't.  And honestly, it didn't really matter back then, did it!  Swimming on it's own was fun!

Good evening Anna,

You are a master at staying balanced and calm! For some it's easy for others it takes being focused and working at it. It can be accomplished with the right mind set! My hat is off to you super woman!

LOL I had to laugh Dorie Dillard Austin TX I sure don't feel like a super woman right now!  In my mind I'm so grateful I know how to keep the balance and stay calm pretty much no matter what happens.  I see folks all around me loosing their 'cool' for what seems such a waste.  I'm just not going to do that.  I'm am sure you're cool, calm and collected as well!

Anna- you are an inspiration for staying calm and balanced and for not letting bumps (and mountains) in the road stop you!!! Always positive!!!

That said...I don't do heights...couldn't even climb up Larry's deer blind. I would have been one big bucket of mess.

Hi Kathy Streib that's a whole other ball of wax, fear of heights.I don't recall running into any students back  in those days with a fear of heights.  But if we did, we'd for sure find a way to work around that and create another opportunity to learn staying balanced and calm.  It's good to know ones limits! There is not a chance I'd be climbing that pole today!

Good morning, Anna... not a snowball's chance in hell would I ever do anything like a high ropes course. That being said, my natural character is to stay calm and balanced. That is not something that has ever been a challenge to me.

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker I hear you!  That is my natural instinct as well. I never really got 'flustered' as a kid but then when you grow up with 7 sibblings, well, I'll leave it at that!  I had practice 'staying' out of it!!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten no 7 siblings for me, Anna. But people who reported to me in the corporate world always said that when I got truly quiet and calm was when they got worried.

That sounds familiar Nina Hollander, Broker my parents said that about me!  What is she up to!!  Almost always they'd find me with my nose in a book, hiding so nobody could bother me!  I can see that 'look' in you.......oh no....now what!!

Hello Anna - I am beyond thankful that "leadership" classes are a part of my memory and don't play an active role in my life today.  I don't like heights and although I attempt to avoid the word, "hate" my feelings about them may edge close in that direction.  However, the message in your post is a good reminder of the importance of balance.  And, yes, I continue to work on that too.  🤹‍♂️🤹‍♂️

Hi Michael Jacobs I"m with you on that now, for sure!  Not a chance could I even think of climbing up that pole!  That would be totally stupid!!  We can stay balanced  on the ground now, right!  I know you enjoy walking around and simply observing......that too me sounds lovely and very relaxing.

Good morning Anna. When younger heights did not bother me. These days heights bother me one hell of a lot. When it comes to balance, the calmer you can remain the more control you have. That said, I likely would be nervous and have trouble keeping my balance. Enjoy your day.

Feb 13, 2025 04:44 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

For sure Wayne Martin not a chance would I be climbing that pole now!  I'm sure you're a master at knowing how to stay calm in the midst of whatever is going on.

I remember reading about the telephone pole before - I actually think of this often and I am not the one that was on top of that telephone pole (nor would I be!). Excellent lessons to keep in mind!

Staying calm in life's storms. It is a skill we learn when we choose to be calm and balanced versus losing it and creating all kinds of drama.

When I look at your photo and the feeling you had of taking off like a bird and flying it reminds me of when I did a tandem jump from an airplane. It did feel like flying once the free fall stopped and the chute opened.  Exhilarating feelings for sure Miss Anna "Banana" Kruchten

How fun is that Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist  - skydiving!  Now that's something I thought of but never did.  It must have been a spectacular feeling flying through the air. WOW!

Very impressive. Not something I would attempt. I don't doubt it would be good for me, I just know I couldn't do it. I've had panic attacks over far less frightening things.

Feb 13, 2025 08:51 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Hey Sharon Tara you know I never had a panic attack - until they wanted me to have an MRI.  I went crazy as they attempted to stuff me in that tube.  They had to get me out of there - as in NOW.  Shocked the he** out of me as I didn't think that was even a possibility!  But I now know what you're talking about, for sure!

Hi Anna,

The high rope analogy has a certain flair, but dabbling with height in real life feels like an audition for danger’s circus. Instead, I’ll stick to the graceful flow of Tai Chi—it’s all about finding physical and mental balance without the need for a safety net.😄

Feb 13, 2025 10:39 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Aura Alex I"m with you on the Tai Chi now!  Not a chance I'd be climbing that pole unless I was totally stupid!! Oh the thought of it makes me hurt! Says a 70 something woman!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I hate heights.  When I was going through fleet prep training in the Navy I had to jump off a platform 18 feet high into a pool with 8 feet of water.  I stayed calm and did it, BUT it seemed like it took forever from the time I jumped until I hit the water.

Feb 13, 2025 11:19 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

HI George Souto sounds like you didn't have a choice! Some things do seem like they take forever when it's only been a minute!  Funny isn't it!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - Oh, I know how it feels. I graduated through several Leadership Programs, but it was Leadership Flower Mound through the Chamber of Commerce that made us go through the High Ropes Course. It was so hard for me to let go and I knew there was no way down except to let go and follow the rope. Plus, anyone not completing the ropes test would not graduate. I took a breath. Said a prayer and soared down through the trees. By the time it was about half-way over, I discovered I really enjoyed it. That's when I discovered fear is a man-made emotion

Feb 14, 2025 11:54 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Yup!  I agree Patricia Feager it's am emotion that we all create whatever it means to us.  I was a bit of a dare devil most of my life so the stuff I tried and enjoyed probably would have scared many others. Skiing was one of those things......we used to ski down those double blacks like we were invincible.  Now?  LOL  I'd be happy to be on the greens!!

I have done a lot of what some people would consider crazy...usually involving water.

Both my son and daughter have done the high lines and climbed mountains...and I tried but was too heavy at the time to pull myself up and get very high...but I would like to try again!!

Never give up Mike McCann Nebraska Land Broker ! Or at least the idea of it.  Would I  climb that pole now?  Not a chance with the recent hip joint surgery I had that didn't go so well.  But it's fun thinking of doing fun stuff!!

Hi Anna:

Not sure I would be up for the High Ropes Course given my concern about heights...perhaps in my younger days. Certainly you learned a lot about yourself and that really is the value! And some good life lessons!
