A Mothers Love.

Most of us have fond memories of our Mom. When I think about my mom and the tragic end of her being it makes me want to be better prepared for mine.

Most of us are familiar with Harry Chapin's Cat In The Cradle. The first step I made to make sure to avoid the regret of not spending enough time with my children was that I quit a high paying job that had me on the road every day (I lived that life as a child seldom seeing my father who lived under the same roof).

We made our children our priority, we were there every day for them. Believe it or not my wife and I hired a babysitter ONCE in all the time the kids were growing up.

This is a Real Estate Blog so to tie it in let me say next to spending time is giving your children a HOME to live in.

You don't need to buy a McMansion. The idea is to grow close to your children. Our children grew up in a home of 700 square feet that we later expanded to 1100 square feet. The focus of our home was the dining area that was used as both a place to eat and a place to play games. Our home was never media centered, it was always family centered.

This is also a Valentine post and valentines are all about LOVE. I hope you all had a wonderful day/weekend of  love. What could be better than receiving a valentine from your child professing their love for you?

Dear Bob,

Love does not need Hallmark cards to be practiced. Good thing that you prioritized spending time playing games and being together.

Dorte Engel with both of my children being professional artists I seldom see Hallmark on the back of a card. It's wonderful! 😊

Good Morning Bob "RealMan" Timm

Our first house (we rented) was 600 sq.ft. and we had 2 boys with the third coming. We moved to a townhouse apartment then we bought our home 1176 sq.ft (still live there. We wanted stability for the boys. Each of the places we lived was just that. What made it home were the occupants.  We are family and wherever family is, is where home is.

You are welcome Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho . We mixed it up a lot to include Yahtzee and cards like Go to the Dump. We did play a lot of Sorry (board game) too.

Hello Bob,

It’s inspiring to see how you foster family connection within a modest living space. Your focus on creating a family-centered home shows that relationships and shared experiences matter more than material possessions.

Emphasizing the dining area as a hub for meals and games is a great reminder that it’s the memories we build that truly count.

Thank you for the feature Aura Alex 😊. I learned by bad example. Money isn't as important as a close family. Being a Real Estate professional can be family friendly as long as you set work limits... which I know is not easy.

Good afternoon Bob,

Loved your post because it is all about being together as a family..its not the space you have its what you build within the stucture of your home..big or small.

Thank you Dorie Dillard Austin TX . Once I decided I wanted to be a dad it was all-in for me. My dad was a good man but sorely lacking in nurturing skills. I didn't want to put any mini-me's in that situation.

Your post on a mother's love really hit home, Bob "RealMan" Timm. And thanks for reminding us what truly matters! It's awesome how you prioritized family and created a home built on love and connection, not just square footage.

Thanks Lew Corcoran I'm glad it hit home for you. People thought I was nuts when I quit such a high paying job for what was pretty much minimum wage just so I could be home for my kids.

So true.  The kids will remember the times together rather than the size of the house.  And pass the same onto their children.  We raised our kids in 2 houses (actually 3 but the oldest was 2 when we left Houston for home).  That daughter was laughing about telling her co workers about growing up in the country with hay bales in the barn to climb on (which was forbidden because of snakes) and crawling up on the roof.  Visiting the goats and small bull calf.    They didn't believe her at first.  Asked her about the snakes and she said they just took their clues from the dogs.  I am like how did I not catch you in the barn? But the youngest grew up in town so didn't have the great adventures the 2 youngest had.  But she did love playing with the frogs in the yard.  And the granddaughter kept us busy with games.

I wish I would have had some country memories but I've always been a city boy Faye Y. Taylor . That being said I'm willing to bet my daughter ends up with a hobby farm to raise capyvaras.

Good morning, Bob. I get your story and your message. I did not grow up in a nuclear family like yours. We were immigrants and my mother was a single mom. She worked a full time job and two part-time jobs to support us and ensure we did not go to NY City public schools. Mostly, we just saw her on Sundays. At the end of the day you do what you have to do for your family. But I never doubted my mother's love for us.

My heart goes out to the single mothers out there Nina Hollander, Broker . I just was not God's plan but it sounds like your mother made the best of it Nina. Thank you for the sobering comment.

Good morning Bob. A house can be huge but a home can be any size as long as you can spend quality time in it with your family. I learned that the hard way but have no regrets. Enjoy your day and stay warm.

Feb 18, 2025 05:21 AM
Bob "RealMan" Timm

Thanks Wayne Martin . Staying warm has been very difficult for several days here. This morning the air temp was 30 below zero again. Only one of our four cars started this morning. The good news is it is supposed to warm up to 40 above  by Sunday... a 70 degree change, WOW. Really looking forward to it.

A house does not become a home until life is lived and memories are made.  I learned this lesson in my younger years when I purchased my dream home.  Unfortunately, the kiddos' friends were on the other side of town.  I sold that house and bought what I considered a dump. I know, first world problems.  At any rate, this house was just what the dr ordered. The yard was always full of kids and my kids still talk about the friends they had and the adventures they shared with them. My kids have never mentioned the ugly rug, the outdated wallpaper etc.  They made memories in that HOME.
