Ask An Ambassador: Private Schmivate...

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.WarrenCountyOhioRealEstate.com SAL.2002007747

I realize at this point that about the only thing that is truly private our the thoughts kept between my ears and never expressed...but given time Big Data will probably figure out a way to get those thoughts too.  You speak about something to your spouse and minutes later the ads show up on social media.

In ActiveRainLand we have two categories of posts and questions:  Public and Members Only.

Public posts and questions (and even comments you leave on ANY public post, not just your own) can be indexed by Google and other search engines and broadcast to the world to be found. That's the idea right?  We're trying to generate business, so being found is key.

Members Only captures two categories:

1.  it's the default for any member who is in the Rainer category (unpaid membership...you have to pay to be indexed until you get your free Rainmaker account at 500,000 points).

2.  Specifically selected posts and questions that are meant to be ONLY for members of this community.  These posts, questions, answers and comments are NOT submitted to the search engines.  The posts can't be reblogged.  It's also prohibited in the Community Guidelines (Do not republish any content revealed in a Member's Only post).

That said, don't think that just because something is Members Only that it can't be seen by people you might not want to see it.  Membership is not limited to only real estate professionals.  What does that mean?

Your clients could be reading a Members Only post.

Your broker could be reading your comments.

Your spouse could be reading :)

That agent you had a ruckus with?  Yeah, that person could be reading too.

And with Screen capture software pretty much standard on our laptops and phones, it's a few seconds of work to have an image that can go anywhere...no matter what the Community Guidelines require.

The reality, every comment, every post, every question, every answer has the potential to be seen by anyone inside or outside of this community.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Oh there is nothing that can't be seen or heard anymore I am not surprised at all anymore when Gary talks about something he bought or is thinking of buying online and then it shows up on  my FB as an add.  Why in the he** would I be buying some circular saw or whatever .......it's beyond nuts to me.  And annoying too Bill!

There is ONE time where our conversations led to an ad that actually helped us.  The refrigerator for our new home was a brand I'd never heard of, but after checking it out, we added the company to the list.

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - it may be too simple to point to Big Brother, Little Sister or my mom who to this day claims to have eyes in the back of her head. Yes, even the thoughts kept in the vault of our minds may be suspect.

In other words just remember everyone is listening or reading what you say or search for! It can be most annoying at time to keep seeing ads pop up for items I did a search on! Once or twice I can see but its never in moderation!🤣

Dorie, click one polo shirt ad on Facebook and you'll get 47 more in the next week :)
And as for this community, there are always lurkers reading what we post and our comments on other members' posts, and sometimes those lurkers could be someone with a referral.  Better to make a positive impression than be busted giving someone grief.

So true. If you wouldn't want your mother/father/siblings/children/client/friends/leads to read something, don't write it, even in a supposedly private Members Only post.

We know Google can even rank comments, so what can be found can make a difference.  And I suspect most members have a mental list of who they will and won't refer to, and the comments we make influence which side of the ledger we finish.

I like transparency and don't mind being fully transparent myself, so I doubt that I ever leave any private or members-only comments, haha.

Brian, there are some topics I will not discuss in this forum and that is influenced by my purpose of being here.  1 on 1 we can talk about almost anything.

As I tell my clients when viewing a home, there may be cameras, the doorbell may record what you say, so be careful. And when preparing an agreement of sale I talk about confidentiality as there is no guarantee that the seller will not instruct his agent to share your offer with others.

Baby monitors, security cameras, there's no guarantee of privacy within the four walls, and stand too close to the Ring at the door and you may not be private there either.

Marte, not a bad thought process.  So many of us are connected across multiple platforms, that something posted outside of the Rain may still have influence in the Rain.

Hi Bill:

This is a good reminder for us all about the illusion of privacy on AR. I suspect many do not think much about it unless something happens, or perhaps don't care even though they should.

Sometimes people think they're immune to the consequences of what they type.  Personally I don't want to find out where the limits are.

Bill- that's the thing about social media and blogging...they give us a faux mask of sorts. If you think someone won't read what you wrote, guess again!!!.

Lots of lurkers that read, but never comment.  I don't really give a lot of thought to snoozing someone on Facebook who forgets they were humans before politics became 100% of what they post.

Hi Bill,
Other than the thoughts I keep in my head, I suspect they are going to be in the public domain... not that they should be, but they could be. There is an advantage to living alone unless I talk out loud to myself. LOL

Carol, I get the occasional temptation to comment on some of my friends' Facebook posts that have a political bent, and then I remember that when you enter into that arena, there are people that don't believe in playing nice in the sandbox, and I just don't have the time or the mental energy to want to deal with them.  No matter how rational my approach, they'll try to shank me for not being 100% aligned with their own opinions.
