To Comment or Not to Comment That is the Question

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeStarr Realty RS143922A

By commenting on each other's posts, we create friendships and relationships with the writers of the posts. How else can you cultivate relationships with Active Rain members? Commenting forms a line of communication. We acknowledge each other and our thoughts.

Do comments lead to discussion posts? Yes, of course, they do. Perhaps they may even result in a phone call or text message for further discussions. Friendship and comments are a two-way street; we all have something valuable to say. The conversation may even inspire someone to write something. It is vital to engage in conversation. After a while, you wonder if anyone is reading what you say.

HelpfulHannah

So, inspire someone today. Tell the writer they wrote a good story. Tell them you like their photo, enjoyed the book review, or will try their recipe. Let them know you read their post. Could you encourage them to write another one? Perhaps one day, you could have inspired someone sitting in the shadows. Maybe they were afraid to express their thoughts publicly. Make a suggestion, and you may encourage or cultivate a friendship by commenting on someone's post.

When you read a post you like, do you Comment? Do you let the writer know their content is valuable? Do you try to form a line of communication? I hear so many voices asking why no one is commenting.

To Comment or not to Comment—that is the Question. Spammers are eliminated and reported quickly, so there is no reason to be concerned about them as we once were.

Hello Hannah Williams I was out of the rain for a long time then came back. I had always enjoyed the people sharing stories and information about all kinds of topics. I was mostly just reading and sometimes commenting. Endre encouraged me to start participating again with comments and posting.  I really do not understand what happened with him not being allowed to be here anymore. I have kind of lost my zest for being here too.  I know I wouldn't be missed as much as many people miss Endre.

Good morning, Hannah... I read up to 30 posts a day and comment on up to 25. That being said, if I try to engage with someone with me comments and they never respond, I do stop commenting. Hard to engage or build relationships with those who don't engage back.

Feb 21, 2025 04:04 AM

Nina Hollander, Broker I agree. I do pretty much the same. It does get frustrating when you constantly comment on someone's post and they never reciprocate. It makes you feel like you have nothing valuable to say

Good morning Hannah,

It is important to comment on posts we read especially if we have something to add to the conversation. Such a good way to develop relationships. I will send referrals based on content and tone of those who write posts. Their posts show me their mind set as well as their comments they make on other posts! Congrats on the featured post!

Hello, You are so right. I usually comment on a post if I like it . I also make it a point to comment on others who take the time to comment on mine, as that's how we establish relationships. I am so excited this was Featured and thank you Dorie

If I read something of interest and have a positive comment to leave, I do leave it. There are posters who do not respond in any way, and after many times of commenting on their posts, I have stopped. Even if the information is interesting. Oh, and I rarely comment on information that appears to have been written by AI or another source.

I enjoy commenting on everyone's posts in the Rain, but when they aren't commenting on mine, I take that as a sign that they aren't interested in getting to know me and I cease from commenting on their posts any longer, haha.

Feb 21, 2025 05:58 AM
Hannah Williams

Brian England  That is an exciting statement. I guess you are right. I never thought of it that way. Usually, if I like a post but the author does not acknowledge my comment, I will not comment again. Some respond but are not interested in my posts. It gets old when there is a one-sided relationship.

I don't comment near the degree that I used to, but a lot has changed in those years both in the Rain and my personal time available for the Rain.  More dogs, more cats, more bees, more work (until recently), so something had to give.  If I leave a comment, you'll know I read the whole post.  I know to be aware of whether a post is public facing or Rain facing and temper any comments accordingly.  I don't subscribe to mandatory comment reciprocation, if I'm writing something worthwhile that gives a reader reason, to comment, great!  And if I don't, well that's on me as the writer.  I don't want anyone to feel obligated to leave a comment on my post just because I left one on theirs, but everyone has their own preferences.

Feb 21, 2025 10:41 AM

Liz and Bill Spear  You do respond when someone comments on your post, Bill. I do not feel obligated to react to someone, but it is nice to let others know they are being read and what they have to say is important even if they are not featured.

True friendships have been made in the Rain by doing this. You get to know each other and look forward to each other's comments and posts. It is not mandatory; it is just a suggestion.

Bill you are who you are and are loved for it

Hannah, making sure I respond to comments on my own post is something I can do.  Conversations can be started if desired.  I've met in person a fair amount of Rainers as a result of being here, and talked to many, many more via phone or text.  I'm nowhere near Margaret levels though :)

Liz and Bill Spear,

Thank you for the mention. I’ve been less active with the newer members lately, but I've been in touch with someone from AR most days. I would be willing to make more calls, but I want to be careful not to intrude.  If anyone would like a call, send me a message.

Hi Hannah,
I always try to comment on posts I read to let the author know I was there. However, if I disagree or don't have something kind or useful to add, I move on. I don't feel compelled to express my opinion.  Commenting is definitely the way to build relationships, and relationships are what life is all about.

Carol Williams You are terrific and known for giving a writer a Second Chance in your weekly series. You feature them to allow others to read their posts that they may have missed reading.

I agree that if there is no interest in the post, not commenting is perhaps the best option.
