How to Save Money on Your Utility Bills

Lowering your utility bills doesn’t just save money—it also makes your home more energy-efficient and appealing to potential buyers. Whether you’re staying put or preparing to sell, these practical tips can help you reduce costs while keeping your home comfortable:

  • Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances
    • Switch to ENERGY STAR-rated appliances for significant savings on electricity and water.
    • Replace old light bulbs with LED options, which last longer and use less energy.
  • Seal Air Leaks
    • Check windows, doors, and vents for drafts and seal them with weatherstripping or caulk.
    • Ensure your attic and walls are properly insulated to prevent heat loss in winter and cool air loss in summer.
  • Use a Programmable Thermostat
    • Set your thermostat to adjust automatically when you’re not home.
    • Lowering the temperature by just a few degrees in winter or raising it in summer can make a big difference.
  • Be Smart with Water Usage
    • Fix leaky faucets and install low-flow showerheads and toilets to cut down on water waste.
    • Use a rain barrel to collect water for outdoor plants and landscaping.
  • Unplug Unused Electronics
    • Electronics consume power even when not in use. Unplug chargers, TVs, and other devices when they’re not needed.
    • Use power strips to make it easy to turn off multiple devices at once.
  • Leverage Natural Light and Ventilation
    • Open blinds and curtains during the day to reduce the need for artificial lighting.
    • Use fans to circulate air and reduce the need for air conditioning.

Small changes can add up to big savings, and an energy-efficient home is a huge selling point in today’s market. If you’re thinking about selling or buying in Auburn or the surrounding areas, I’d love to help you find the perfect home that meets your needs and budget. Excellent ideas.  Small things over many days do help the power bill.  Following Mom's advice of turning off the lights and unplugging the iron and coffee pot help too.

All good ideas for saving on utility bills.  I had to shake my head in disbelief with a recent rental move out.  At the back door they chose to screw in an additional insulator at the door bottom.  Problem was the screwed it to the floor, thus blocking any emergency exit.  Can you imagine the disaster had an emergency exit been needed.  One more item to add to the lease although one would have though common sense would prevail.  Make it a good weekend.  m

Those are great ideas. Another way to save money on utility bills during the hot summer is to get spray applied radiant barrier on the under side of the roof decking in the attic. This will reflect a large percentage of the radiant heat back out of the attic. This along with proper attic ventilation will keep your attic cooler, reducing the demand on your cooling system.
