As Stories Are Shared. . .

A March 2025 ActiveRain Challenge Entry

The annual Academy Awards presentation earlier this week may not have had much or any impact on you.  I understand that. However, it is an event that still interests me.

Beyond the movies nominated or any historic reach of the industry I enjoy the film-going experience even though I am not always the target audience of exhibitors. Many things related to entertainment as well as the business of movies continue to intrigue me. There is no end to the fascinating aspects of Hollywood even as the boundaries of the film world are being challenged.

Despite negativity which seems far too common, there are countless things in everyday life that show me interconnectedness and interrelatedness of film are very much a part of my life. And, yes, it's an exciting must-see experience!

And like moviemaking or story telling of any kind, compilations play important roles.   While distinct characters may be seen and recognized for their importance in starring roles, it seems to me that the combining of traits observed and sensed have relevance. Sometimes beyond any individual performance that may be captured. It can be collaborative as well as choreographed. Aye caramba, the combinations!

Even a look at some of this year’s selections offers me a glimpse of what is happening around us.   The BrutalistA Complete UnknownI’m Still Here.   Yes, each was a film title this year. I can understand why some or all may not have any significance to you, but each story relayed is a part of my life now because of my experience in viewing. Looking beyond continues to show me a more in-depth story.  I am not saying that those who have influenced me over the years in reality have simply been playing parts in my life. However, it is truthful that like pieces of a puzzle, a bigger picture can be pulled together in ways that seem almost magical or even serendipitous through cinema.

Outside the theatre, I believe each person we encounter in life has some sort of influence. Showing us positivity or teaching us lessons that we learn in other ways is important in my opinion.

This is my submission for this month's challenge co-hosted by Patricia Feager and Lew Corcoran. In my entry, I tried to connect moviemaking, storytelling and people all of which have played important parts of my life. So far. And likely into the future. As always, thank you for your consideration and for reading this post.

Love films across the ages... silents, film noir, whatever won the across the pond festivals and inbetween Michael Jacobs. Not always the subject matter or how the plot advances either. Lightning, camera angles, editing and the length of the lens used. Love how the film is shot and stitched together for target audience experience.

Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573 - you're right, countless aspects of filmmaking highlight the vast amount of talent exhibited in the industry.  Pick-and-choose what you enjoy.  I believe the possibilities are endless.  Thank you for the comment as well as the visual accompaniment.

Interesting Michael.  I too am one of those that thinks as 'life' as a movie in the making with all kinds of characters and plots to explore.  Sounds like fun to me.   As for actually movies I can't remember that last time I've gone to one....way before covid I'm sure.  It's easier to watch something at home for me now. But again, I'm not really into watching movies often.  I think back at a lot of the funny ones I remember.....and that's fun.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - reviewing favorite movies in our mind as we recall moments, scenes or something else memorable can be a fun activity.  And best of all, our recollection edits the best parts.  🎬🍿🎞

That's for sure Michael!  Smiling now as I think of some of the comedies I've seen over the years!  Way fun!

Hi Michael- I used to love the movies and used to go to them. When I watch them now, I prefrer streaming them because I seem to have a clock on my behind and don't enjoy sitting for a long time.

I think we are all influenced by people we meet and people we see, on the screen for example. When I work on not being judgemental, I always think of a character that was on the soap As the World Turns. Kim Hughes was not judgemental so in my head I'd think of how she would think about a situation.

We're all sponges of a sort and  to absorb something from what's around us normal.

Kathy Streib - while I haven't become well-versed in the world of streaming, I know others who like the power and flexibility it offers.  When it comes to As The World Turns, my mom, her sister (my aunt), grandmother as well as many in their group were fans so I was aware of its existence even though the storylines were likely beyond my comprehension.   Your "sponge" comment is appropriate as we soak up all sorts of information.  And certainly beyond the sink.

Hello Michael,

Movies have the power to mirror reality through compelling performances. The way actors portray their roles can impact our own lives and beliefs. Despite the prevalence of fiction, some stories hold truths that are often ignored in today’s society.

Aura Alex - the power of entertainment can be quite real even if it may be initially explored in fantastical ways.  This force majeure of sorts continues to be interesting.  The lines of reality are not quite dull nor sharp - it's a challenge in progress.

I love how you weave together the magic of storytelling with our everyday lives in your piece, Michael Jacobs! Your perspective on the interconnectedness of film and personal experiences is refreshing, and I really appreciate you sharing these thoughts; they remind us all to look for the deeper stories around us.

Michael, A good entry for this challenge. Movies are entertainment for the masses and their stories are shared by all who see them, upon their release and for years to come, because they do impact the viewers.  The movies/stories become part of our culture, like the 1939 Wizard of Oz.  It's impact is still being felt today.  There are so many variations on that film over the years, with the newest release in 2024, Wicked, which I understand is a good movie.

Mar 05, 2025 02:50 PM
Michael Jacobs

Gloria Todor - movies/entertainment is definitely connected to our culture.  Themes, lines as well as lyrics/songs become part of everyday life as reality is blurred.  I didn't see Wicked this year - even though it was one of the movies that was quite popular (no pun intended).

Michael Jacobs Movies are also significant to me (as you know ). I had no idea The Brutalist was about a Holocaust survivor. A terrific role for Adrien Brody as his last Oscar was for the Pianist. Now, this movie is at the top of my list. The Complete Unknown Second should be on Hulu this month. Wicked will be on Peacock this month .

I look forward to seeing these films since I missed them in the theater. Where is the feature button

Hannah Williams - movie-goers are becoming rarer and rarer in the ActiveRain community but they are an enthusiastic group, aren't they?  I hope you get to fill in some of the missing films on your list.  Good luck.

What a wonderful post you have woven connecting moviemaking, storytelling and the important people who played a significant role in your life. I enjoy movies and find myself wanting to see certain ones as I want to see what the producers feel is what people want to see. Sometimes it's like comparing to designers who take a gamble on what will excite the current available audience.

Michael, you highlight an important point about how so many interactions we have on a daily basis can influence our lives. Whether it be movies we watch that can impact us emotionally or simple things we can do to impact someone in a small way. I try to set a daily goal of trying to take advantage of every opportunity I have to make a positive impression on someone else's life. This can be a simple compliment to a cashier at a store or a phone conversation I may have with a personal friend.  We can all have a positive impact if we set our minds to it.

As it is recorded: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Everyone we encounter is indeed a part of our lives Michael Jacobs . Movies are not my thing BUT I feel the exact same way as you do of movies only for me it's music. Thank you for a very thought provoking post.

Your storytelling ability makes the movie world so much more relatable. Loved this post! I do love movies too Michael Jacobs although I've seen none of the nominated ones since I never heard of any of them except Complete Unknown, since I no longer watch regular TV, I rarely see movie trailers. My movie Dad growing up was John Wayne, I always related to him because my step Dad and Grandfather were so much like him.

Hello Michael Jacobs - I used to be a big movie fan.  I would go to the matinee showings not only because they are less expensive, but because there are (or were) fewer people in the theater.  I can appreciate the impact in your life for having the viewing experience.

As a child, I was mesmerized by the big screen and the awards were the whipped cream topping to the sundae with chopped nuts! My husband and I used to go to the movies quite often, moreso when the boys were growing up, Michael.

Now, we seldom go, and instead, watch from home when they become available to rent.
