It's Great To Automate - BUT You STILL Need To COMMUNICATE

By

It's unfortunate, really.

There's a gal online who sells crystals. They are of good quality and I've spent a good amount of money (close to 4 figures) buying her stuff for me and for gifts.

She spends a LOT of time on FB and IG as an 'influencer', and her entire life is out there for review as well as her mom's. That's great. We 'know' them.

A while back, I had occasion to ask a question about a piece that I purchased.

My question was, will you be getting more? - I'd like to buy another as a client gift. (This piece is in the $300 range  -- the high end of what she markets.)

She's in FB all the time - so I messaged her. No response.

Okay. I get that we're busy and I have all but abandoned my Messenger - it requires more energy than I'm interested in spending.

BUT I am not 'doing business in there'!

So I posted the question to her page. "I messaged you about this. Do you anticipate getting more of these in? Any ETA? I'd like to purchase for a client. Thank you!"

Again, no response. I 'hoped' maybe an assistant might be able to relay a message or maybe even answer the question.

But I CONTINUE to get emails about this and that . . . practically daily.

Do I even bother with this shop again?

I realize that she has automated her business.

We automate ours too, and it's convenient.

But when a REPEAT CUSTOMER has a damn question and is SPECIFIC about it . . .

you run the risk of never seeing them in the purchase cart again if you aren't willing to communicate!

I totally agree. When a business ignores customer requests, especially repeat customer requests, they are doing themselves a big disservice.

You’ve hit the nail on the head, Candice A. Donofrio! It's a shame when automation overwhelms personal touch—your insights serve as a vital reminder that real connections and communication are what keep customers coming back. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

Yeah  . . . and everything else she does is really good. Packing, shipping, all she needed to do was tell me either yes will get you another one (cha ching!) or we don't know if we will get any more, or IDK! OR I'll find out.
Not rocket science. We do this every day! LOL

Good evening Candice,

That's a shame she doesn't have time to answer repeat customers questions, she has zoned out and will loose more business because she obviously doesn't care!

There's a couple of Netflix shows out now about the ADDICTION to ARTIFICIAL attention via socials. One chick lied about her entire life for attention and money and lost everything. Another lied about her health and lost her life.
These people to whom clicks, likes and comments are more important than building their business and relationships IN REAL are risking longevity.

Hi Candice- some automation is helpful but when you have a question from a customer, you need to take action. Pick up the email/text/smoke signals and make contact!!! Libra.

Yup, I'm one of those who's gonna write a dissertation in response to a question about one of my products. But it can be as simple as an acknowledgement and quick yes/no . . .   xoxoxo♎

My Dad has a basic phone but instead of having to push the 7 button 4 times on his, I push it once and then have to scroll over to the letter I am trying to choose, haha.  It is so frustrating and I thought it would be what you described instead, haha.

Whenever I'm teaching a class to RE agents, I'm constantly reminding them (I'm sure to them it's excessive, but I don't care) of the importance of keeping in touch and communicating with your customers. It's a relationship business, and relationships require communication. And, not just texting, IM'ing, and email, but a personal phone call every now and then. I'm sure I'm sounding like a dinasaur to them, but no one wants to talk to one another anymore. The comment I get - it's not good time management! Great post and continued success to you!

It's a relationship business

💯 I used to teach 'client communications and risk reduction' for CRE brokers as well. It is literally our reputation and protection from issues to keep those lines open. To those who say it's not good time management to communicate, believe me I get that HOWEVER it is a competitive market for clients out there and the ones you'll KEEP and do repeat and REFERRAL business with over a long period of time are the ones you'll sit with on the phone to help them upload an Amazon gift card you sent them for Christmas - not the ones who sent you the URL and said 'good luck' . . . 😎

That is good teaching, and of course depending on the client. I have clients who don't need to hear my golden tones unless it's necessary, and others who hate technology and must speak and I am continually on phone with those. It balances out! LOL

I like to followup with many different formats...but I do not use messenger much as it is tied to the computer and to my wife's phone number as mine was flagged 3 or 4 years ago when my FB page was shut down by FB.

I will admit that there have been a couple times in my career where I have not answered or made a call efficiently enough and it has cost me a client.

Mar 05, 2025 02:35 PM
Candice A. Donofrio

Oh wow! I haven't been wanting to use Messenger much at all, it is a royal PITA and I HATE DMs! I don't like to use it for business ever unless the client prefers it.
As for losing a client over a missed call, LOL that has gone the other way for me!
I had a guy, perfectly capable of calling and texting, BUT on phone major boundary issues, going on tangents accomplishing little but draining me dry every time (and I'm a good talker!). I did 3 deals with him, and weeks after the last closing I missed a call from him and he did not text or leave a VM - just expected me to redial RIGHT THEN. I did not really wish to do more business with him anyway so I wrote it off as a 'butt dial'. He 'got mad' and went to someone else LOL
He tried to come back a few months later and I knew why. The agent he hired would NEVER have let him drone on and on . . . I emailed him that I had too much on my plate. Time is money and mine is limited if I want to be efficient!

Hey...one other thing...where is the photo of the old Brick phone?  Those things even worked in the mountains around Colorado Springs back in the early '90's!

Automation has made its way into every aspect of our lives, unfortunately, BB. I want to talk, then listen to a human voice when calling, so do our clients.

Oh, and on my wish list is someone that I can easily understand. Apparently, it's too much to ask in so many cases these days! 💋

There is nothing worse than poor communications.  I just dropped my new doctor because her communication system was so poor.  I think she hired an outside company to answer her phones (at least, I hope its not her own people).  Anyway, I couldn't understand the operator.  She couldn't understand me even when I talked very slow and she just could get that I just wanted to make an appointment with the doctor.  Heck, that's her job.  I hope you are doing well!!!!

I can't even COUNT the number of times I've fired a doctor whose staff SUCKED. I've jettisoned docs I loved for that reason. Including 2 VETS. F that!

Candice A. Donofrio - Until now, I never heard of having to press 7 several times to get a letter s. That sounds crazy!

Also, I never automated my business, but I did have a recent experience just before Christmas last year. I was looking for a particular product from Maine. I found what appeared to be the perfect catalogue place and tried to contact the company to no avail. Because the address was very familiar to me because I lived in Maine, I called another store I shopped at within a few miles from that store I was trying to place an order. As luck would have it, that store replied back: "Never heard of them."

It makes me wonder how many stores and products are out on the Internet and nobody is there.
