"Antioxidants, vitamins, and pure joy, all in one little blueberry!"
Grab the syrup. Today is National Blueberry Pancake Day! There’s no better way to celebrate than by having a stack of golden, fluffy pancakes bursting with sweet, juicy blueberries. And for me, this day is extra special because the blueberries I use come straight from my brother’s farm, Klock’s Farm & Nursery in Corbett, Oregon.
For over 40 years, Klock’s Farm has been growing some of the best blueberries you can find. Hand-picked and packed with flavor, these berries are the perfect addition to any breakfast table. And, there's nothing wrong with having blueberry pancakes for dinner either. Regardless of when you eat them, whether you like your pancakes light and airy or thick and hearty, there’s something special about warm blueberry pancakes.
Here is the link to a song I created about the history of Klock Farm & Nursery.
Blueberry pancakes are more than just a breakfast staple; they’re a trip down memory lane. They bring back memories of Sunday mornings with that unmistakable aroma of pancakes seeping through the air into my room. I was a pretty picky eater in those days, and it was one of the few things that could get me out of bed early. Klock Farm wasn't in existence when I was a kid because my brother was just a kid, too, but they were still good. Now, when you use fresh or frozen blueberries from Klock’s Farm, they become something even better, a taste of homegrown goodness in every bite.
Here are some fun facts about blueberries:
Blueberries are one of the only naturally blue foods – Their deep blue color comes from anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that give them their vibrant hue.
Blueberries are packed with antioxidants – They rank among the top fruits for antioxidant levels, helping to fight inflammation and support brain health.
They were one of the first foods eaten by astronauts in space – Freeze-dried blueberries were included in early space missions as a nutritious snack.
A single blueberry bush can produce for decades – With proper care, a healthy bush can produce fruit for 40–50 years!
The U.S. is one of the largest blueberry producers – Maine, Michigan, and Oregon (home to Klock’s Farm & Nursery!) are among the top-producing states.
Native Americans called them “star berries” – The blossom end of a blueberry forms a star shape, and indigenous tribes used them in food and medicine.
Blueberries can be frozen without losing their nutrients – Unlike some fruits, blueberries retain their vitamins and antioxidants even when frozen, making them a perfect year-round treat.
They were domesticated in the early 1900s – Before that, people had to forage for wild blueberries. Today’s cultivated varieties were first developed in the 1910s.
July is National Blueberry Month – While we’re celebrating Blueberry Pancake Day in March, blueberries get an entire month of recognition in July when they’re in peak season.
Blueberries are great for your brain – Studies suggest that eating blueberries regularly may help improve memory and cognitive function.
Want to make the perfect batch of blueberry pancakes? Here are a few tips:
* Use fresh or frozen Klock’s Farm blueberries. They're going to be frozen this time of year. Don’t thaw them before adding to the batter, or it will streak the batter. If you want a psychedelic look, go for it with thawed berries.
* It is best to sprinkle them onto the batter after pouring it on the griddle to distribute them evenly.
* Use buttermilk if you want a richer, tangier flavor. It also tends to keep pancakes lighter and fluffier.
* Cook on medium heat. This prevents the pancakes from burning before the centers are cooked through.
* Top with more blueberries and syrup. I make fresh blueberry syrup because it's awesome!
I'm still in Arizona, so today I’ll be looking for a place to enjoy a stack of blueberry pancakes. I hope you will, too! Whether you’re making them for yourself or sharing them with family and friends, this is the perfect way to enjoy a simple pleasure that’s delicious and healthy.
So fire up the griddle, grab a handful of farm-fresh blueberries, and let’s celebrate National Blueberry Pancake Day in the most delicious way possible!
