searcy ar high school typing class 1950's

1950's typing class.

Who remembers this?  Do they still have them?

I found this old picture inside a 1950 Searcy Arkansas yearbook.  It was a free picture just inside the book with several other pictures, mostly football.  So I assume that it was from the 1950 school year. Searcy Sleuths may even recognize some of the students.  I definitely remember being in a classroom that looked like this and learning how to type.  Now I think that it was one of the best classes to take and learn typing.  Typing is still something I still do a lot of when using the computer. The knowledge has stayed with me all through the years.

So.....do they still teach typing in school? If not, what took its place?

Hello Barbara - I don't know if typing is still taught in schools.  However, I do know that I continue to appreciate that it was first available to me as an elective in junior high school.  It is a skill I continue to benefit.

Barbara S. Duncan good morning, Barbara... I don't remember typing class in the 1950's, but I do remember when my high school acquired IBM selectric typewriters in 1964... I took a typing class at that time most to "play" with those typewriters. And the classes took... I can still 60+ years later type 70+ words a minute.

Great question - I don't know if it's still taught. But when I was in high school in the 1970s, yes, it was taught and I took that class and loved it. I can still hear the ding of the manual typewriter in my mind!

What I find interesting is there is a good mix of boys and girls. Typing was always thought of as a woman's job. I had typing lessons in the Air Force so missle maintenance reports could be typed. I don't remember ever typing a report though.

In 1950 I was a freshman in SHS and don't recognize anyone.

I agree, Don, that typing was considered a girl's job.  I always thought when I grew up I had two options.  One was a typist in some company or be an airline stewardess.  I still think it is one of the best things that I ever learned.
