Capture the Moment

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Ward County Notary Services 607851

There was a day when capturing the moment was not easy. Not that long ago a good picture required a good camera. The most common cameras were made by Kodak and Polaroid, names hardly heard of today but at one time pretty much ruled the camera world.

The camera above is a Kodak #1 camera. This was a good camera in it's day. They made and sold so many of them that even today you can pick one up on eBay for as little as $30.00.

I'd guess that there are two or three generations today that have never owned a camera. The first digital cameras hit the retail market in the late 1970's but it wasn't long and they were replaced by the cameras we use today in our phones. Samsung introduced the first smartphone with a camera in the year 2000. An interesting history can be found HERE.

Cameras and Real Estate are a great mix.

Skipping over the obvious joy of photography there are many practical reasons to join Real Estate and photography together. Before I proceed to "why" I want to point out that digit storage is dirt cheap. A 1TB external hard drive will hold approximately 500,000 photos.

WHY

A photographic history of your home will bring you many benefits. A photographic history of your home from day one, even before you move in the furniture, will show you and others the progress of change over your ownership. From day one and going forward it is good to have a history that you can retain for insurance reasons. Pictures of any structural changes before and after are not only valuable for insurance reasons but can also be used to show added value if/when you sell the home. The same can be said about added out buildings and even added landscaping and cement work. Even added insulation, plumbing and electrical work is worth documenting for insurance and future resale value (don't forget about that new electrical panel).

In the interest of brevity.

Why take pictures of appliances and furniture? Because you can! Insurance would be the number one answer to that question. If you can date stamp these photos (of "stuff") it can be handy for warranty information. It helps settle arguments: ie "Honey, we have had this old couch for ever, let's get a new one". or "Dear, you just bought a chainsaw last year". You get the idea.

In conclusion.

Most of us have a camera with us every waking hour of the day, why not use it? Storage is cheap.

Documentation of your home and what is in it is a blessing should you have an insurance claim. Documentation can help you prove the value you have added to the home when the time comes to sell your home in the future. Reviewing your homes history can bring you many smiles and settle a few arguments in the future.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. Hello Bob, I wish I kept some of the cameras I had over the years.  I remember putting in film in the day.

Me too Will Hamm . I had a nice little collection of old film cameras including the Kodak #1 as pictured above but they were claimed by the flood we experienced in 2011.

Hi Bob... I was never "into" cameras and even today I usually forget I have a camera in my phone!

I think camera "geeks" like me are really in the minority Nina Hollander, Broker it just doesn't "click" with everyone. My mom loved taking pictures but her entire like she was really good at be-heading people. 🤪

I used to work for Polaroid back in the day Bob. Still have some cameras. My favorite was the folding SX-70 with the leather case. Regarding your son's cartoon?

Great advice. We have taken before and after photos including some construction photos.

I seldom keep up with purchases as I should Leanne Smith but I took a ton of pics before our flood and they sure came in handy when filling out claim forms. The "after" photos are something I will always keep as well because it sure is easier to tell people about a flood when they see the pictures.

Thanks for sharing such an engaging insight into the evolution of photography and its relevance in real estate, Bob "RealMan" Timm. Your perspective on preserving a photographic history of our homes really highlights the practical benefits while reminding us to appreciate the little moments—and that’s something we all can relate to!

I don't spend much time reviewing my photos Lew Corcoran but even photos of household photos occasionally bring a smile to my face. Why did I buy that? That was the best purchase of my life. Oh, I do own one of those...

Bob "RealMan" Timm - I enjoyed reading your fine written post today! When it comes to cameras, I'm a fanatic! Smart phones make things convenient, but it doesn't hold a candle to a professional 35mm Camera. I have had 3 rear-ended accidents on my new car and each time it happened, I was glad my camera/phone was charged so that I could take immediate photos on the scene including taking a picture of their driver's license.

For personal gatherings and special occasions, vacations, and when I want to capture special events, I use my professional camera. In the old days, using cameras like you described could be very frustrating after finding out that I double exposed film, paid for blurry pictures, or not having the ability to edit before digital cameras were available at a price I could afford. We have come a long way and I'm glad!

You touched on many good points, especially taking photos of your home. It wasn't that long ago, 1994 when I didn't have quality photos of inventory from my home. It made it very difficult to settle up with the Insurance Company after a major house fire.

Thanks for writing a great blog post.

Thank you for the very kind review Patricia Feager . I had a real love for cameras for a long time but loosing my film collection in the flood took the shine off that for now. My favorite was an oddball, a Russian medium format 1930's Lubitel. I got some wonderful shots with that camera after wasting a $100.00 or more of film in the process of learning how to use it.

Hello Bob "RealMan" Timm it is important to capture the moment especially in real estate. In the past most real estate agents kept a camera in the car, and with technology taking photos advanced a lot.

John Pusa  thank goodness for those advancements and especially for digital photography.

We've come a long way in taking photo,  especially in real estate. I can remember taking photos and then getting them printed and putting them on brochures! You made some excellent points on why you should take photos of your houses and the things in it!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX we sure have come a long way. I remember back 50 years ago when agents used the instant polaroid cameras that kicked out a black and white print that needed to set out a minute or two to develop. Then you had to smear some "fixer" on it to insure the pictures stability. After that a really modern office might have a black and white copier to make prints for flyers.

Cameras have come a long way! I remember waiting days for the developer to develop my photos, only to find out half of them weren't very good. It's amazing now that we can take 10 photos and delete the nine that aren't great. And yes, storage devices allow us to store tons of photos. While it's nice to flip through a photo album, I do like the ability to take a bazillion photos if we want.

Mar 05, 2025 05:12 AM
Bob "RealMan" Timm

That is for sure Kat Palmiotti . I remember when 1 hour photo rocked the world. At least we didn't need to wait a week to discover we misloaded a whole roll of film. Part of me misses flipping thru an album but the rest of me remembers every album I had lost it's ability to hold the pictures and they would fall out one by one.

Hi Bob,
I've been interested in photography since I was a child. I love having a camera at my beck and call.

I do need to take an updated digital inventory in my home for insurance reasons. Thanks for that reminder.

It is wise to update whenever a significant purchase is made, such as a new big-screen TV, furniture, etc.
