I’m at Peace On Pi Day

Another AR March Challenge Entry

(Or is it an Entree?)

In some circles today, March 14, 2025, is also known by its far more interesting name, Pi Day.  No, not National Pie Day which is celebrated each January.  Admittedly, there are countless confusing things in everyday life. Mixing up Pi Day with that much too tempting (for some) taste treat might be a delicious dessert sidestep in the buffet line of life.

Of course, Pi Day celebrates the mathematical constant which quite frankly is not as fun to explain or to digest.  Any day can come together for me as words, wordplay and many sorts of combinations dealing with etymology are parts of a bigger picture. Yeah, I know I'm a word nerd who finds such stuff fascinating.

Words. Spoken and read as well as those overheard in passing can be fuel for fodder. Talk about a never-ending source of conversation, right? And when elements of arithmetic arrive, the possibilities for mind expansion can be exponential even for those of us who really don't have keen awareness or sense for numerous things from the analytical world. Anyone up for a word problem or two? Do you remember those days in elementary school where the English language tried to combine with math in the most challenging of ways. If a locomotive was traveling. . . How about a discussion on the subjectivity of statistics? Combine those things with some wordplay and we're talking fun times, for sure.

Back to today and its relationship to this month's challenge. I'm at peace today, March 14, on Pi Day as pieces of it feed my imagination. Many sorts of communication, the symbolism of words as well as the reality of mathematics combine in interesting (at least for me) ways. In the meantime, these words of wisdom from that math acquaintance, Pythagoras are memorable and meaningful today as food for thought is served:

Silence is better than unmeaning words.

There is geometry in the humming of strings,

there is music in the spacing of spheres.

A thought is an idea in transit.

And for a different slice on the subject, I will leave you with these thoughts of a man famous (or infamous) from the pie world of my childhood, Soupy Sales:

I've always been a big fan of pie.

Although it may seem to some, that this post was quickly "thrown together" - words as well as mathematics combine to make sense in my mind and divvy up my thoughts. This is another (perhaps, tongue-in-cheek entry for the March 2025 AR Challenge co-hosted by Patricia Feager and Lew Corcoran as combinations in life continue to come together in many sorts of ways. I continue to appreciate how such things combine in everyday life. Life's a feast, let's enjoy it!

Good morning Michael. Your stock may be rising in the world of theory with your idea of combining the wisdom of Pythagoras with the comedic touch of Soupy Sales.  A definite unique approach to the world of Pi or maybe Pie. Enjoy your day.

What a fun post Michael Jacobs . I had not heard the name Soupy Sales for at least five decades! Your first quote reminds me of this Bible verse:

Proverbs 27:15-16

15 A nagging wife is like the dripping  of a leaky roof in a rainstorm. 16 Stopping her is like trying to stop the wind. It’s like trying to grab olive oil with your hand.

Bob "RealMan" Timm - it's incredible to think of the genesis (no pun) of quotes.  There are countless examples of similar thoughts shared over the years, it's interesting to see how they are interconnected.

I have never considered myself a mathematician. Whilst things made sense in the classroom, in front of me during homework there was no sense at all. I am good at basic things, but geometry, etc. leaves me lost. So, I found it interesting when my youngest son described Math as creative and interesting. He saw it from a completely different direction to me. He now has a PhD and is a professor of Biostatistics so that math has helped him out.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - constant flash cards, memorization and rote learning helped me with basic math skills but deeper understanding as it became more difficult proved to be difficult.  Kudos to your son - he obviously found his calling.

Hi Michael,
The quote: Silence is better than unmeaning words reminds me of a quote often attributed to Abraham Lincoln that says:  Better to remain silent and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt."

I try not to speak unmeaning words, but I'm sure I do in some people's minds... maybe a lot of people.

As for mathematics, I was not born with a mind for complicated numbers and equations. I can do basic math, of course, but when it comes to Pi... it goes over my head.

Carol Williams - good call - that Lincoln quote you mention is a long time favorite and the similarity deserves notice.  When it comes to many sorts of things, "basic" works well for me.

Hey Michael Jacobs, thanks for sharing such a delightful and thought-provoking piece! I love how you blend math and words—it really adds flavor to Pi Day! Here’s to finding peace in the delightful chaos of life’s little puzzles!

Once again, your word smithery and sewing together of words has risen to the equation. Math and formulas, recipes and baking...they do go hand in hand. If I took my best recipe...tried and true...It would not compare with the masterpiece of a dish you just created.

Kathy Streib - my culinary skills lack much so I try to stay out of the kitchen except for raiding the refrigerator far too often but I appreciate your comment.  Happy Pi Day - however you celebrate and in any way you slice together the festivities surrounding it.

Hello Michael,

Indeed, the delightful dance of words and numbers—the ultimate power couple of human ingenuity! It is fascinating how language adds poetic flair while mathematics cuts to the precise rhythm of reality. Together, they form an orchestra where metaphors waltz and equations keep the beat.

Truly, the intersection is where logic shakes hands with creativity, all the while keeping us intrigued (and perhaps slightly humbled) by their charm.

I was off for a few days Michael and just had to come back and pi day away.  I so remember talking 'statistics' back in high school as if it were a foreign language!  But one of my teachers pulled me aside and said......let me show you how simple statistics really is.  To my shock and amazement it was easy. Not sure how to tie that into pi day but I just did!

Michael, What comes to mind after reading your post are 2 movies, A Beautiful Mind and Good Will Hunting.  I enjoyed algebra only.  Pythagoras, gosh his name seems to have inspired many names in geometry, lol.  Soupy Sales and Jerry Lewis....

Michael Jacobs  Here I am, late for the party again and on Pie Day!  Soupy Sales, what a show back then; he was one of the best . There was a white and black fang. I have to laugh as I remember their names, but that is it. We didn't have many shows to choose from. I had a delicious Tomato Pie from my favorite Pizza pie  place with my good friend.

Hannah Williams - I kinda remember some sort of fang character associated with Soupy Sales.  He was a classic.  As for being late for the comment party - whenever you show up, it's time for a celebration.
