Friday Fun…What’s In a Name?

Today is Middle Name Pride Day! I know nothing about it but it’s interesting, when you think about it, that we’re given middle names

Usually our middle name is given to us to honor a relative or good friend of the family.  Some people we know choose to use their middle name instead of their given or Christian name.

Most of us knew when we were in trouble with our mothers…they always called us by our given AND middle name!

In the South, everyone has a middle name. I remember when I was in school, we had a new classmate from the North. When my friend learned the new student didn’t have a middle name..her response was…

“Well, you’re in the South…we’re going to give you one!”

I always gave my dogs the middle name “Marie.” Don’t ask me why but I had Lucky Marie and Lady Marie.  Marie is one of the most common middle names!

Mine is Lynn. My poor mini-me had 2 middle names. One is mine (Katherine) and the other is her dad’s favorite aunt’s name (Ruth).

So, share with us, if you feel like it, your middle name.

My middle name is Anne, Kathleen Anne. The middle name came after my godmother, who I might add, I didn't even see after I was probably about 12 or so. I don't know why - my parents and godparents just didn't get together after that.

As for using first and middle names when someone is in trouble, I don't remember them ever calling me by both names!

Kat Palmiotti I met my godmother once and that's when we went to San Francisco. I guess she was someone they knew when they lived in CA. I think my older cousins who went to USC and remained in CA visited her. She was godmother to all of my grandmother's 8 grandchildren.

Hello Kathy - my middle name is Thomas for my father. My brother's middle name was Lee which was also my dad's middle name.  My sister's middle name is Ann which I don't know why but I guess it proved effective when getting her attention.   My mom has no middle name has her first name is kind of a portmanteau of two of her aunts' names, Rosemary - not in honor of the plant, mind you.

Michael Jacobs Michael Thomas is a strong name...solid! I got to give my younger niece her middle name (because they wouldn't let me name her LOL)  It is Alyssa...giving her the initials SAG! She wasn't fond of the SAG part! LOL

Middle names are interesting.  It seems that some people use them instead of first names, while others barely ever use them at all, haha.

Brian England I have a friend whose middle name is Texas!  Yep!

Hi Kathy Streib - My middle name is Ann. So is my sister, and my daughter. Just about every kid I knew growing up had a first or middle name Ann. It must have been pretty popular!

Patricia Feager I think it was because I know many people with that middle name. Of course, then there's the ever=present dilemma, is it Ann or Anne?!

My middle name is Roy. My first name, Calvin, is after my grandfather Calvin Archer Roberts. Calvin Archer, from Virginia, was a soldier during the Civil War and died in a Union prison camp. We have visited the memorial.

Roy Kelley that is so interesting!!! I did not know your given name is Calvin. Your family is a part of our history!!! When we lived in Leesburg, Larry and I spent a great deal of time visiting the Civil War battlefields and monumnets.

I'm from East Europe, Kathy... not a habit to give middle names there. I don't have one. I have a double first name Nina Alix, but no one ever calls me by both. My brother and my husband don't have middle names either. I do, however, have a patronymic when in Russian circle: Nina Ivanovna... although I can't think of a single time anyone has ever called me that.

Mar 07, 2025 06:46 AM
Kathy Streib

Nina Hollander, Broker I don't even see you as a Nina Alix!  Perhaps the middle names are more common here, especially in the south.

Nina Hollander, Broker

Kathy Streib they do like their double names in the south, as well. I actually prefer Alix to Nina and I have some friends who call me that. But at this point it's too late to make any major changes.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I love the name Nicholas!!!  That's funny that you wanted your brother's middle name when you were younger.  Larry's middle name is his father's first name.

Thanks, Kathy, for the delightful dive into the world of middle names! Your anecdotes are such a fun reminder of how names carry stories and connections, especially in the South. I love how you turned a simple concept into something we can all relate to—who knew a middle name could spark so much nostalgia? Here’s to embracing the quirky and meaningful parts of our names! My middle name is James.

If you were named Patricia, your middle name was either Carol or Ann, possibly Sue. Mine is Carol, and it is not a family name. My parents thought it sounded nice, so they just plucked it from the air. :)
