What are the Top 5 Items Stored in an Attic?

It's March, and the Christmas decorations are finally stored in the attic.

I don't "bounce" as well as I used to, so I recruited my daughter-in-law to help put things away, and to dial 9-1-1 if necessary. (Honestly, it was more to help open and close the attic stairs, but more on that later).

The DIL commented on how large my attic space is, and daydreamed of having aPat on Attic Stairs big game room up there (not happening). Anyway, that got me to thinking, what are the typical items stored in folks' attics?

1. Leading the list at number 1 is Christmas and holiday decor, Halloween, Easter and fall items. I downsized a couple of boxes this year, but still have ornaments, Santa's, Christmas gnomes, garland, and all size trees. Some boxes decided to reside on shelving in the garage for convenience sake.

2. Next, old clothing - seasonal, vintage clothing, or keepsakes. As I surveyed the items in MY attic, this is not currently true but it has been in years past.

3. Furniture - I just don't see myself hauling furniture into the attic, but this would be more practical for those living in a home with a second floor walk-in attic, instead of the pull-down stairs most Mississippians are accustomed to.

4. Family heirlooms. Most of you have seen movies with people reminiscing, and going through possessions in the attic. You'll remember seeing framed prints, old blankets, stuffed animals, etc. I wouldn't recommend putting anything in the attic that can't take the Mississippi heat as summers are brutal and most attics don't have enough ventilation to keep things cool.

Man on Ladder

5. Boxes of memorabilia, like old school reports, toys, books, or collections. I'm convinced I left a small box of childhood mementos in my last house as I have not come across them in the last eight years in my current home.

If you are moving, it's a good idea to cull your belongings so you don't have to move everything into your next home. You can find lots of tips on downsizing, but if you ARE moving, don't forget what's in the attic!

Now, back to the safety issue, I can't tell you the number of times sellers or homeowners have missed a step and fallen through the attic. If you need someone to hold a ladder, don't be afraid to admit it. Be sure you have proper lighting and watch your step! Broken bones or worse is not worth going solo. If you have to wait until March to put things away, so be it.

Now, what's in YOUR attic?

Morning Pat, we don't store anything in the attic in Denver, we have basements.

Good morning, Pat... no attic in my house that can be accessed. But I do have a heated and cooled storage room off the side of my garage where I store holiday things, file cabinets, luggage, etc.

Joan Cox - Do you have a dedicated storage room in the basement?

Nina Hollander, Broker - Oh, how wonderful to have climate controlled storage! Good for you.

George Souto - the only thing in my attic currently is Christmas and fall decor. It's so difficult to access the attic through the stairs that many of the boxes are on shelves in the garage. I used to store much more up there, but I'm beginning to look at that "stuff" differently by slowly decluttering and eliminating.

Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty well, I did build it that way for a reason when we built our home! :)

Yes, I have around 500 sf of open space (unfinished) for storage.   So wonderful.

Many of us need to get rid of a lot of stuff. Our surplus is in our basement rather than an attic.

Have a great day and an outstanding weekend.

Thank you Roy Kelley for stopping by while you recuperate. Hope you are feeling better. I agree with your statement that we need to get rid of a lot of our stuff. We can't take it with us forever!

Thanks, Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty, for shedding some light on the treasures lurking in our attics! Your humor and relatable anecdotes made me smile, especially the bit about needing a helping hand up there. It’s a great reminder to declutter and stay safe while tackling those dusty storage spaces—many of us could probably use a good cull! Here’s to finding some hidden gems (or just making space) in our homes!

I knew of 2 that I would think most common but we do not use our attic for storage at all.

Lew Corcoran - I'm not sure about hidden gems, but I certainly find things I have forgotten about. Most are unfinished craft projects, some old Coca-Cola glasses, and extra wood flooring.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 - I bet your storage is also a basement? In the south, we have attics, and mine is massive. But you would not want to be up there in the summertime. Attics get HOT in the south!

Seasonal decorations being stored in the attic makes the most sense to me and I certainly wouldn't want to be storing furniture up there, haha.

Brian England - right? It would require a walk-in attic, which would still mean a second story home.

Good for your for finally getting your Christmas decorations put away!  We don't store anything in our attic.  Nada.  But we do have 2 storage sheds on each side of the house for decorations, patio furniture stuff like that.  But thankfully we've donated a lot of stuff this past few years and decided not to have so much stuff!

Good plan, Anna "Banana" Kruchten - I'm "trying" to donate stuff, too.
