"In 2000, I was scanning the “for sale” house listings, looking for what was proving to be impossible. I wanted a house that both my husband and I could fall in love with. We’d been living in a traditional brick home for the last 17 years and I craved a light and airy contemporary that was nestled in the woods. A place to watch the seasons change, the birds, deer and squirrels, a place to breathe deeply and provide respite when we weren’t rushing from work to after school activities for the kids. My husband was looking for room to spread out; a place where he could store all of his cars and bicycles and work on them when time allowed.''
''We both needed home office space. I needed a kitchen that would be the heart of our family. 1805 By Woods caught my eye for the location and living spaces while my husband fell in love with the garages and storage.
I remember walking into the house and just feeling comfortable. As open as the spaces are, there’s room for everyone in the family to have privacy even when the house is full with visitors. Our three children had their own bedroom suite, 2 full bathrooms and a play and homework area. The first-floor master bedroom suite has a bedroom that rivals those of the nicest resorts we’ve stayed in. We have always had hanging bird feeders on the deck outside our bedroom windows and enjoy watching many, many species coming to snack. The view from our bed is directly into the woods, with the scenery changing every month. In the spring, the woods start to bloom with a soft greenish haze and then the leaves pop out and the greens deepen. We love seeing the mountain laurel, dogwoods, redbuds and magnolias bloom in sequence. During the summer the trees and plants take turns showing off until October, when the woods become orange red and gold.
1805 By Woods Lane is an incredibly easy house to entertain in.''
''Everyone is drawn to the kitchen where the center island can seat 6, another 6 people fit easily on our sectional sofa while another 6 people can be sitting around the sunroom table.
The dining room can easily seat 24.''
''Designed by a professional architect, the food preparation area provides easy access to every appliance and food item, making entertaining easy and sociable. During the summer, the deck seating areas are close to the snacks and in the winter, we often have a cozy fire going in the kitchen.''
''I think that the sunroom is our favorite place for family games or a good puzzle. On a nice spring or fall Sunday, nothing beats sitting in the sunroom with the screen windows and the sliders open and the ceiling fan on. In the winter, the radiant ceiling panels make the room toasty warm.
Built by a custom homebuilder for his own family, this home is incredibly well built and detailed. Every building material is solid, exceeding much residential construction.
One of the biggest surprises has been our neighbors and neighborhood. People walk the neighborhood (it’s a 2.8 mile loop if you turn down all the streets) all hours of the day and night. The gate closes at 8PM and we always feel safe in our beautiful “private park”. The neighborhood is multi-cultural, multi-generational and the neighbors are friendly. When I was new to the area I joined the association board and enjoyed meeting just about everyone. There are lots of dog walkers and once again young families out and about, as the neighborhood has evolved into a new generation of homeowners. ''
Why are we moving?
''In 2004, we purchased a property on Harris Creek in St. Michael's, Md. It faces due west, with a perfect sunset view. We decided that this was the spot where we wanted to retire. Over the years we've renovated and enlarged the house to accommodate our five children and eight grandchildren and now that we’ve retired were making it our primary residence.''
