5 Ways You Can “Go Green” after you purchase a home in Putnam County

If you’ve just bought a home in Putnam County and want to make it more environmentally friendly, here are five ways you can “go green”:

1. Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances

Swap out old appliances for Energy Star-rated models to reduce electricity and water usage. This includes refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, dryers, and HVAC systems.

2. Improve Insulation & Windows

Putnam County winters can be cold, and proper insulation helps retain heat, reducing energy bills. Consider adding spray foam insulation, upgrading to double- or triple-pane windows, and sealing gaps around doors and windows.

3. Utilize Solar Power

Solar panels can offset electricity costs while reducing your carbon footprint. New York State offers tax credits and incentives for homeowners who install solar energy systems, making it a great long-term investment.

4. Implement a Rainwater Collection System

Reduce water waste by collecting rainwater to use for gardening, landscaping, or even flushing toilets with proper filtration. This is an especially smart move if you have a large yard or garden.

5. Switch to Native & Drought-Resistant Landscaping

Instead of high-maintenance lawns, consider native plants that thrive in Putnam County’s climate. They require less water, fertilizer, and pesticides, helping to support local wildlife while reducing your environmental impact.

Good morning Thomas. Everything is a matter of money. If it is time to upgrade, yes. spend a few extra dollars for an energy efficient one as long as the return for utility cost  savings is in the near future. Have to replant think about the plantings. Just don't overspend for a poor return and you can do it over time. Enjoy your day.

Ahhh sustainability - love it. It's part of saving money in the long run, with some investment now. I've been incorporating 2-3 of these ideas in my home each year, taking my time. Over time I'll see the benefits and ROI. Here in Florida we need Impact Glass (Hurricane) windows. I installed ours 2 years ago and our electric bill went down about 20% over night.
