Motivational Monday…A Different Point of View

Have you ever looked at a room in your home trying to decide how you could redesign or reinvigorate it? But as hard and as long as you looked, the room stayed the same and your mind was blank.

That happened to me years ago when I wanted to revamp the kitchen/breakfast area. Per Larry, I could do or add what I wanted but I couldn’t knock down any walls. (he knew me all too well)

One day I was standing in the kitchen on the countertop cleaning the area above the cabinets. I looked out over the area and eureka!

The answer was right in front of me!  What I needed was to change my position when looking at the room…a change in perspective.

Simple, right?!  Sometimes it’s just a matter of physically changing our position.

Harder yet are the times when we have to be a bit more creative. We have to use our minds and our senses to view a situation or person in a different light...see their world as they see it.

Review what we know and assess a situation from as many views as we can.

It’s not always easy to do, though. Between the legacy news and what’s being thrown on to social media, are we hearing the truth or some version of the truth?

(fast forward to about 1:30 minutes into the video…from Something’s Gotta Give)

We’re only human. We hear…we see…we form an opinion. We were given a brain to help us muddle through the rest.

Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.
Marcus Aurelius

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.
Henry David Thoreau

Each person does see the world in a different way. There is not a single, unifying, objective truth. We're all limited by our perspective.
Siri Hustvedt

Yes Kathy, It's all about perspective and how we choose to interpret the world around us!

Good morning, Kathy... a wonderful analogy. I was very fortunate to have attended Harvard Business School where they instilled the decision tree analysis process in us. That analytic process meant we kept looking at issues and always asking what if and what then?

I know part of the Decision Tree Analysis Process includes identifying the potential consequences of an action. I think that is one step that is often overlooked in many of the decisions that are being made in our society these days.

Nina Hollander, Broker I'll have to learn more about the decision tree analysis. Sounds interesting.

Kathy Streib Call me sometime and I'll explain it. It's really a simple concept in principle. Harder to explain in writing.

Carol Williams you got that right, my friend! It's generally only been taught in graduate business schools... so no wonder most people don't know how to think critically.

It can definitely be difficult to see things from another point of view, since we don't have that point of view (that we're trying to understand). Great post to get some thinking started!

Kat Palmiotti I don't think we can ever totally see what someone else's view is.

Kathy Streib - There are so many stories I have as a spinoff of reading the short stories of those you shared about perspective, but I will keep them to myself. You are SO right! When there is the potential for conflict or misunderstanding, it's really all about perspective.

Excellent post. By the way, "Something's Gotta Give," is one of my favorite movies. Jack and Diane played their roles so perfectly to fit their characters.

Patricia Feager I hope that some day you'll share them because you have a sensitive way of seeing things. I bet I've seen that movie at least 2 dozen times if not more.

Kathy Streib - sometimes you just have to stand on your head or turn a scene around to see its full glory. I liked to draw pictures in pencil upside down and they always come out better than if I am looking straight at it. Meaning, when I look directly at what inspires me, it can sometimes come out childish. Turn it around and keep it that way and go to work. Turn it around when done and it is 100% crisper, cleaner, and looks more professional.

Good morning Kathy,

Love your post and a great analogy.....sometimes we need to walk away and come back and look from a different angle and its amazing the different perspective you often find. I've always liked "Something's Gotta Give," one of my favorite movies!

Good morning Kathy. Marcus Aurelius was so far ahead of his time especially with the legacy news of today. And, Henry David Thoreau was point on. And Siri Hustvedt brought it home with perspective. Thanks for sharing. In many ways a wake up call. Enjoy your day.

Hi Kathy,
This is a deep subject for so early on a Monday. LOL

The quote that struk me is:
"Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth."

The problem these days is that it's hard to get actual facts from which to form an accurate opinion.  I laughed at the part where Nicholson says he has never lied. Everything he says is some form of truth. Isn't that the problem? We get some form of the truth but not the whole truth?

Carol Williams that one line has stayed with me since I saw the movie. Sadly because of what we've learned, we find it hard to believe anything we're told...even from the medical community. That's no way to live.

It can be very hard for people to open their eyes and see what is right in front of them, to change their perspective and see if through the eyes of others. A challenge for all of us.

Mar 10, 2025 07:06 AM
Kathy Streib

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I don't think we can...even if we tried because as open as our eyes and brain might be, what we see is still influenced by the fact that we're viewing it through our eyes...our experiences, etc.

Using our God Given brain is the key, in my opinion.  If all we do is listen to what others scream and shout, and not form our thoughts and opinions, we are nothing but sheeple.  Sometimes even a change in perspective does not work.

Kathy the photo above about the yard, is kind of like my wife and me about snow.  She will stand at the window when it snows and chant "let it snow, let it snow", and I will stand at the window "YELLING STOP, STOP".  She has never shoveled any snow, I do all the snow shoveling.  I should hand her a shovel the next time it snows, I have a feeling she would be chanting something different at the window the next time it snows.   🤪

George Souto that's funny. When we moved to Leesburg, VA, Larry bought a small snowblower and shovel. When the first snow came, both of us were excited to try our new equipment. We geared up with heavy winter clothes and boots. Fifteen minutes later we came in and took off most of our gear because we were sweating!!!

Well you know me Kathy.  I love to move things around and see things differently!  I'm glad Gary appreciates it too and has great ideas himself for our home and many other things, situations in our life.  That's such a gift to be able to say - hmmm let's think about this - how about this, how bout that?  Opens up the creativity and brings in a whole other new and refreshing energy.  Ahhhhhh that feels so good!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten that's the way to have an open mind. When you approach someone with "what if we tried this? Or how about this? they're more ready to listen.

Kathy:

Our perspective is the lens through which we view the world, life and people around us, and each person has their own. It's a big mistake to simply assume that others look at a situation through the same lens that we do, and no doubt a source of many problems, and misunderstandings between people.
