Moose in Sandpoint, Idaho: Our Wild Neighbors with a Timeshare

If you ever watched the classic TV series Northern Exposure, you might remember the opening scene—a lone moose casually wandering through the fictional town of Cicely, Alaska, as if it owned the place. It was a charming reminder that, in certain parts of the world, wildlife doesn’t just stay in the woods—it strolls right into town.

Here in Sandpoint, Idaho, we have our own version of that scene playing out in real life. Moose are a regular part of the landscape, often making their way through neighborhoods, stopping to rest in a backyard, or even taking a dip in an unsuspecting homeowner’s kiddie pool. They have no problem hopping fences to reach the next tasty treat and will "yard up" in residential areas , finding a quiet spot to rest or a tree to nibble.

Today I recieved a Nixle alert from the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office reminded residents that "authorities are aware of the moose roaming around Sandpoint, and there is no cause for concern or need to report."  In other words, this isn’t an emergency—it’s just life in North Idaho.

Mark Don McInnes has often shared videos of the moose that live and play in Sandpoint Idaho.

While these massive, long-legged locals are incredible to watch, it’s always wise to give them plenty of space. Moose may seem slow and gentle, but they can move surprisingly fast when startled. If you see one wandering through your neighborhood, enjoy the moment from a distance—after all, we may own our homes, but our wildlife has a permanent timeshare.

There is even a facebook page you may enjoy our local moose sightings.

Happy Moose Happy Life. I do remember Northern Exposure and streamed the entire series last year. What a wonderful cast of characters. One of my favorites.

Hello Rain - I vaguely recall the quirkiness of Northern Exposure.  Thank you for including a mention of it in your post.  It ties together much about the time it originally aired, Idaho and parts unknown or unfamilar.  Combinations of many sorts of things continue to interest as well as intrigue me.

Good morning, Rain... our daughter lives in Colorado and we see lots of elk wandering around... and even in the middle of Breckenridge we've been known to see them just walking up the street.

Good morning Rain,

I do remember Northern Exposure and seeing that lone Moose casually wandering through the fictional town of Cicely, Alaska! They are impressive creatures! I can see their sightings are just life in North Idaho.

Good morning Rain. Like your approach to the situation. Well put! The timeshare analogy is spot on and creative. Enjoy your day.

A few years back we were at the National Park in Maine and from a distance could see a moose. We knew to stay well away

it's very rare to see a moose where we are. In fact, we've only seen one (once) on our property. We were thrilled to see that one though!
